In their own words
Gisto
Gisto is a free, open-source application for managing and sharing code snippets. It works with GitHub Gists, GitLab Snippets, Snippet-Bin, and local browser storage. Users can search full text, apply custom tags, group by language, and filter by content, filename, tags, or description. Its Monaco editor provides syntax highlighting, autocomplete, Emmet, and configurable settings. A snippet can bundle multiple files, including code, documentation, configurations, and README files; supported formats include Markdown, HTML, JSON, CSV, and PDF, with live preview for GitHub Flavored Markdown. Users can connect an AI API key to create snippet descriptions and tags. Local-only mode stores snippets in IndexedDB and supports editing, tagging, querying, export, and JSON import without an internet connection. That mode does not sync across devices or cloud providers. GitHub and GitLab synchronization connects directly to their official APIs, while access tokens are stored in local storage. Snippet-Bin can be self-hosted. Gisto runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted setups.
Snippet Box
Snippet Box is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted application for creating, editing, browsing, and managing code snippets in different languages. Its built-in editor handles snippet authoring, while syntax highlighting and detail views help users read code and documentation. Markdown support allows notes or simple documentation alongside snippets. A tagged library supports filtering, and users can pin important or favorite snippets to the home screen. Search covers snippet titles and descriptions, with language and tag filters that can be combined in one query. The project documents Docker deployment and a non-Docker route that runs the built server with Node.js. The listed backend uses Node.js, TypeScript, Express.js, Sequelize, and SQLite; the frontend uses React, TypeScript, and Bootstrap. A Docker example mounts a host data directory at /app/data. Docker build instructions include Linux and ARM targets, including arm/v7 and arm64. The listed plan costs nothing, and no free trial is listed.
