Overview

GitBook combines editing, review, publishing, and access controls in a single documentation platform. Contributors can work in a visual block editor or Markdown, or use GitHub and GitLab synchronization. That range makes it a sensible fit for teams mixing nontechnical authors with developers, though teams already committed to a self-hosted or static-site workflow may prefer a more direct fit.

Key features

Git Sync supports branching, review, and merging documentation much like a pull request. Preview deployments and site variants give teams ways to check changes and maintain different presentations before publishing. Published sites support custom domains, responsive layouts, SEO features, and redirects, while traffic to published documentation is unlimited. Analytics help teams understand how content is used.

Tiered roles and permissions control who can view or edit content. Authenticated access can limit docs to selected customers, employees, or other authorized users, with support for Okta, Azure, Auth0, AWS Cognito, OIDC, or a custom backend. This flexibility is useful for customer portals and internal documentation, but access-control needs should be matched to the plan: SAML SSO is an Enterprise feature.

GitBook Agent can find documentation gaps, draft updates, and review changes. Assistant answers questions using documentation and connected sources, and both tools can integrate with Slack, Linear, and GitHub. Free Agent use is capped at 10 messages per week; Ultimate includes 500 successful Assistant answers. Teams expecting heavy AI use should check whether those allowances suit their workload. Compatible AI tools can also use GitBook's llms.txt and Markdown outputs or its MCP connection. The REST API supports standard methods for content, collaboration, and integrations.

GitBook states that customer data is encrypted in transit and at rest and stored in U.S. data centers. Its Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022 compliance; the company also states GDPR compliance.

Pricing

GitBook uses a freemium model with a 14-day free trial. Annual billing includes two months free. Paid plan prices are per site, and Premium and Ultimate each add $12 per user/month, a cost that can outweigh the site fee as a team grows.

Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed per site/month. It is aimed at individuals and includes one user, unlimited page views, and 10 Agent messages per week. It is a useful way to publish without a traffic cap, but the single-user ceiling makes it unsuitable for a collaborating team.
Premium: 65.00 USD per month, billed per site/month when billed annually, plus $12 per user/month. For public, branded documentation sites, it includes unlimited page views, a custom domain, AI search, analytics, and site redirects. It adds the core publishing and measurement tools but not the Assistant or authenticated access included in Ultimate.
Ultimate: 249.00 USD per month, billed per site/month when billed annually, plus $12 per user/month. Intended for centralized documentation with AI, it includes unlimited page views, Assistant, authenticated access, and 500 successful Assistant answers. It is the relevant step up for restricted docs and Assistant use, though teams should consider the answer allowance alongside their expected demand.
Enterprise: custom pricing for global teams scaling documentation. It includes Ultimate features, SAML SSO, custom integrations, dedicated support, user training, migration, and a custom contract and invoicing. It is the plan for organizations that need these services and controls, rather than a price-led option.

Platforms

GitBook is available on the web and through an API. The API supports content, collaboration, and integrations; no desktop platform is part of the offering.

Who it's for

GitBook is strongest for software teams that want shared documentation editing, pull-request-style review, and a polished public site, or need to restrict selected content to authorized readers. A solo author can start on Free, while public-facing teams are better served by Premium. Organizations that need authenticated docs or broader AI assistance should consider Ultimate; teams needing SAML SSO or dedicated migration and support have a clear reason to seek Enterprise pricing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Git Sync supports branching, review, and merging, which gives documentation changes a structured workflow familiar to software teams.
Pro: Unlimited published traffic avoids a page-view ceiling as readership grows.
Pro: Multiple authentication options and tiered permissions support both public and restricted documentation.
Con: Free allows only one user, so collaboration requires a paid plan.
Con: Premium and Ultimate add $12 per user/month on top of per-site charges, making team size a material part of the budget.
Con: SAML SSO is reserved for Enterprise, and the Free Agent allowance is only 10 messages weekly.

Alternatives

Consider Mintlify if a free plan with five editor seats and a custom domain better fits your team; its listed Starter plan also includes authentication, an MCP server, and an API playground. Fern may suit teams wanting a free forever self-hosting option with 10 members and one site, alongside page and AI-credit quotas. Choose Sphinx if you want free, BSD 2-Clause licensed software to install locally or self-host. DocPlatform is an option for teams seeking a self-hosted community edition with unlimited editors, workspaces, and pages. Stainless is worth considering for API documentation generation, with its free plan capped at five generators, five seats, and 25 endpoints. VitePress is a free MIT-licensed static site generator for teams able to work with Node.js 22 or higher. Writerside offers a free JetBrains IDE plugin with standalone-version functionality. 0docs is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted documentation platform.

Verdict

Choose GitBook if your team wants collaborative documentation with structured review, branded publishing, and a path from public pages to authenticated content. Its strongest advantage is bringing authoring and delivery together without a traffic cap. Look elsewhere if per-user costs, the one-person Free plan, or Enterprise-only SAML SSO conflict with your budget or requirements.
