Overview

ProGet brings package feeds and Docker containers into a repository that can be self-hosted or deployed in the cloud. It supports 22 formats, including NuGet, PyPI, Conda, npm, Maven, Ruby Gems, Chocolatey, PowerShell/DSC, and Linux distribution packages. That breadth is useful for teams managing artifacts across languages and build systems; organizations with a narrower registry need may find its governance features more than they require.

Teams can cache upstream packages, route them through approval workflows, detect licenses, and block packages that violate policy. Fine-grained feed access, retention rules, and vulnerability scanning provide controls over both packages and container contents. ProGet can host private Docker registries and help ensure only approved images reach production.

Key features

Security and delivery controls

ProGet integrates with nearly any CI/CD tool and provides a CLI and HTTP API for identifying components and publishing SBOMs. Connectors can aggregate feeds from ProGet, NuGet.org, Azure DevOps Packages, and Artifactory. Inedo says its Security Labs maintains a vulnerability database and devotes 10% of its resources to cybersecurity research; that security work complements the product's scanning and policy controls, but the Free Edition has limited security and compliance features.

LDAP and SAML support, load balancing, and high availability suit larger installations, while feed replication can support disaster recovery. Asset Directories can store or replicate assets between S3, Google Cloud, Azure, local storage, and the cloud. These options offer flexibility for organizations with existing infrastructure, though they also make ProGet a more substantial choice than a simple hosted registry.

Support

Support includes engineer-led community forum help, documentation, and private tickets for paid users. Inedo also offers professional services for training, maintenance, and custom scripts or plug-ins. Paid support and services can help teams that need vendor assistance, while community support is the option for Free Edition users.

Pricing

ProGet uses annual per-server licensing. All editions support unlimited users and feeds, but a separate license is required for each test or development installation; that can materially affect the cost of teams that maintain multiple environments.

ProGet Free Edition: Free. It allows commercial use and unlimited feeds for private packages and Docker, but has limited security and compliance features. It is the sensible starting point for evaluation or modest repository needs where those controls are not essential.
Basic: 2395.00 USD per year, billed $2,395/year. Aimed at small teams with basic security needs, it is the entry paid option for organizations that need more than the Free Edition provides.
Cloud Edition: 4895.00 USD per year, billed Starting from $4,895/yr. It includes managed services, proactive monitoring, 20TB bandwidth, and 400GB storage, making it the fit for teams that want those operational services rather than managing the installation themselves.
Enterprise Essentials: 11995.00 USD per year, billed $11,995/year. Its enterprise-level security, protection, and compliance features target organizations with stronger governance requirements.
ISV Edition: 11995.00 USD per year, billed Starting from $11,995/yr. Its customer download center and licensed products make it relevant to software vendors distributing products to customers.
Enterprise Complete: 29995.00 USD per year, billed Starting From $29,995/year. It includes multiple licenses, production and sandbox, and dedicated support, addressing organizations that need those environments and support in one edition.
Edge Edition: 59995.00 USD per year, billed Starting at $59,995/yr. It includes ProGet Enterprise features, scalable pricing, edge nodes, and dashboards, for deployments that need those capabilities.

A free trial is available. The Free Edition's unlimited users and feeds make it a low-cost way to establish private package and Docker feeds, but its reduced security and compliance scope is a meaningful trade-off for teams enforcing release policies.

Platforms

ProGet supports Windows and Linux, as well as API and web access. Windows installation is managed by Inedo Hub; Linux hosting is provided through Docker. It can also be deployed on a cloud VM or in a container. The installation guide recommends at least 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for a Linux container, and ProGet itself uses less than 1GB of disk space.

Who it's for

ProGet is best suited to small teams through enterprise organizations that need private repositories spanning packages and containers, and want to enforce security or approval rules before artifacts reach production. Its unlimited users and feeds across editions avoid seat or feed ceilings, while its format breadth and integration options suit mixed toolchains. A team seeking only a basic container registry, or one that must license each separate test and development server, may prefer a narrower or less costly fit.

Pros and cons

Pro: Supports 22 package formats and container artifacts, so teams can consolidate varied artifact types in one repository.
Pro: Approval workflows, vulnerability and license checks, and fine-grained access controls help teams govern what is cached and released.
Pro: Unlimited users and feeds across editions make licensing less dependent on team size or repository count.
Con: The Free Edition has limited security and compliance features, weakening its fit where governance is central.
Con: Annual per-server licensing means separate test and development installations require additional licenses.
Con: The paid editions start at 2395.00 USD per year, a significant commitment for teams that need only basic registry hosting.

Alternatives

JFrog Container Registry is worth considering for a free self-managed registry when Docker, OCI, Helm, Helm OCI, or Generic formats are sufficient and Xray is not needed; its free edition does not include Xray.

Docker Desktop is a better fit for individual developers who want Docker Engine and Kubernetes alongside Docker Hub, Docker Scout, and Docker Debug; its Personal plan is free, while Pro costs 9.00 USD per month.

8gears Container Registry may suit individuals seeking a free-forever option with 1 GB storage, unlimited private repositories, and community support; its Enterprise plan has custom pricing.

Chainguard Registry offers a free image plan capped at five images per organization, so it may suit teams whose needs fit that limit.

Volcengine Container Registry has a free, quota-limited shared Trial Edition that does not support quota expansion, an option for readers whose needs fit those constraints.

KakaoCloud Container Registry offers 30 GiB free outbound traffic, then charges by GiB, making it an alternative for readers whose usage fits that traffic model.

Depot is a paid alternative with a Developer plan at 20.00 USD per month that includes one user, 500 Docker build minutes, 2,000 Depot CI minutes, and 2,000 GitHub Actions minutes.

Quay offers an Apache 2-licensed open-source community distribution, but requires a database and reliable image storage.

Verdict

Choose ProGet when a team needs one repository for diverse packages and containers, with approval, scanning, and access controls to govern what reaches production. Its breadth and unlimited users and feeds are the strongest reasons to choose it; the annual per-server cost, especially for separate test and development installations, is the clearest reason to look elsewhere.
