In their own words
GnuCash
GnuCash is free personal and small-business accounting software for tracking bank accounts, stocks, income, and expenses. Its double-entry accounting requires every transaction’s debits and credits to balance. Small-business tools cover customers, vendors, jobs, invoicing, bill payment, tax and billing terms, and budgeting. Users can create customizable balance sheets, profit and loss, and portfolio valuation reports, as well as charts. GnuCash imports QIF and OFX files with transaction matching; German users can use HBCI to download statements and initiate transfers and direct debits. Data is stored in XML by default. Support for SQLite3, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases is experimental, and some reported corner cases can cause data loss. The GNU GPL-licensed software has installation options for Linux and installers for macOS and Windows. The main application is unavailable for iOS and iPadOS, while the separate Android app appears abandoned according to the project FAQ. The project is maintained, documented, and translated by volunteers.
Talvo
Talvo is a personal finance tracker for bringing accounts, spending, budgets and net worth into one view. It runs on the web, iOS and Android. Its free Starter plan uses manually maintained accounts and transactions, with a spending overview, budgets with pace and projections, insights and money-flow views. Plus adds bank synchronization and automatic categorization with rules; it costs €6.00 per month, billed monthly. Talvo connects to over 2,700 European banks through licensed PSD2 providers, and insights can be filtered by account, category or tag. Spending analysis compares months, highlights category changes and shows a daily spending heatmap. Budgets can carry unspent amounts forward, be rebalanced mid-month, or exclude selected transactions or categories. The app supports 21 currencies, converting to a base currency using daily ECB rates. Bank connections are read-only, and users can export records, disconnect accounts or request deletion in the app. Talvo says data is stored in the EEA under GDPR protections.
