Overview

SeaRates covers ocean and intermodal shipments, showing location and status alongside route visibility and port activity. AIS data from ships, satellites and port stations supports its visibility and arrival estimates. The service also calculates storage time at transshipment ports, a practical detail for teams monitoring transfers.

SeaRates says it was founded in August 2005 and offers its digital logistics tools through SaaS, APIs and white-label web integrations. It advertises logistics-expert support 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Key features

Flexible shipment lookup: Search by container number, Bill of Lading or booking reference, so a team can check status without depending on one identifier.
Map and port context: World-map position and route information make location easier to interpret, while the transshipment storage calculation adds operational context.
Alerts and arrival estimates: ETA predictions and alerts cover status events, departures, arrivals, delays and early delivery. That breadth can help teams act on exceptions, but SeaRates says updates are daily; customers seeking greater frequency must contact an account manager.
Business integration: The API can send status events to a website or connect tracking data with a TMS, ERP or other software. A documented HTML and JavaScript widget offers an alternative to building a display from scratch.
API controls and coverage: Documentation claims 97% worldwide shipping coverage and data from more than 180 providers. API endpoints use HTTPS and requests require an API key. The general quota is 100 requests per 20 seconds per organization, and SeaRates says quotas may change.
Mobile access: The app synchronizes with a laptop and provides live updates and instant notifications, useful for users who need shipment alerts away from a desk.

A tracking request needs only a container, Bill of Lading or booking number; SeaRates says it does not require sensitive business information to be received or stored. Its privacy policy identifies DP World Logistics FZE as the GDPR data controller and describes personal-data handling for the site and apps.

Pricing

SeaRates uses a freemium model: its online tracking tool is free to try, and the pricing note includes a 72-day trial. The free access suits an initial check of the workflow, but no free-plan quota or seat limit is given to help estimate ongoing use.

The Container Tracking API has custom pricing, with monthly or yearly billing periods and usage charges based on containers. Annual commitments receive volume discounts; additional update frequency is available by contacting an account manager. API pricing is also described as usage-based and subject to a subscription offer. Without a price or quota tied to a plan, buyers should resolve expected volume, renewal terms and the cost of faster updates before budgeting. The documented request quota is an API limit, not a published shipment allowance.

Platforms

SeaRates supports web, Android, iOS and API access. That combination accommodates browser-based tracking, mobile notifications and software integrations.

Who it's for

Logistics service providers are a particularly strong fit: SeaRates presents multi-tracking as a way to put shipment visibility on a provider’s website and support customer retention. Shippers and operations teams may also value the shipment lookup, alerts and business-system connections. It is less suitable when decisions depend on more frequent-than-daily updates or an API budget known in advance.

Pros and cons

Pros

Multiple lookup references, map location and transshipment storage time give teams more context than a status alone.
Website widget, white-label integration and API connections support customer-facing tracking as well as internal workflows.
Mobile synchronization and instant notifications extend access beyond the web dashboard.

Cons

Daily updates may be too slow for workflows that need near-real-time changes; higher frequency requires an account-manager conversation.
Container-based custom API pricing and the absence of a published free-plan cap make ongoing costs harder to forecast.
The general API quota may change, so integrations with sustained request volume need to account for that constraint.

Alternatives

Compare container tracking software if you want to survey the category before settling on a provider.

Mati Logistics is a reasonable alternative for a small free workload: its free plan covers 10 shipments with an account or three lookups without one, includes app access, and excludes API access.
Terminal49 may suit teams that can work within a fixed free allowance: its free plan supports up to 10 active containers and three users, with basic notifications and 50 document credits.
Hapag-Lloyd Live Position is worth considering for carrier-haulage legs, where Live Position is added automatically; its merchant-haulage plan is 15.00 USD.
Panvaya Ocean Container Tracking may fit a small ocean-only workload that values live AIS vessel tracking and a port-congestion monitor: its always-free plan covers five ocean shipments and 10 developer API credits.
Tracktainer offers three free tracking credits forever and a volume-based monthly plan at 1.00 USD per month with a 10-credit minimum, a clearer low-cost entry point for limited tracking.
project44 Ocean Visibility is an alternative for buyers considering a paid service with Movement UI or API and 150+ ocean carrier and forwarder connections.
GoComet is another paid alternative to consider.
ShipsGo may suit buyers preferring a prepaid credit bundle: its Pay as you track plan costs 1000.00 USD once for 500 credits, valid for one year, with one credit per new shipment.

Verdict

Choose SeaRates if you are a logistics provider that wants to put shipment visibility on a customer-facing site or connect tracking events to existing business software. Map tracking, port-storage calculations, alerts and mobile notifications make a useful package. Look elsewhere if daily updates are not frequent enough or if you need firm API costs and usage terms before committing.
