Overview

Cloud Logging brings log collection, search, analysis and alerting into a cloud deployment. Google Cloud platform logs are ingested without setup, GKE workload logs are captured automatically, and the Ops Agent collects VM workload logs. That reduces collection work for teams using those environments; the cloud-only deployment is less suitable if logs must be managed on self-hosted infrastructure.

Logs Explorer supports query-based search, sorting, histograms, field exploration and saved queries. Log Analytics uses BigQuery for SQL analysis, and logs can also be accessed in BigQuery alongside business data. This gives operations teams and analysts distinct ways to investigate log data, though it ties that workflow to Google Cloud.

Key features

Collection and parsing: Automatic ingestion for Google Cloud and GKE logs, plus VM collection through the Ops Agent, streamlines common setups. Structured log parsing is supported, and included ingestion is 50 GB/day.
Analysis: Logs Explorer combines queries and visualizations for investigation, while Log Analytics provides SQL. The Log Analytics plan is free, including upgrades to a log bucket and SQL queries from its page.
Routing and archiving: Logs Router can send logs to external systems through Pub/Sub, and Cloud Storage can hold archived logs. The router itself is free, but destination charges may apply.
Regional storage and access: Regional log buckets keep and process workload log data in a selected region, with customizable access controls and retention. This helps teams that need regional control, but IAM permissions still govern who can inspect sensitive logs.
Audit trail: Cloud Audit Logs records administrative activity and resource access, with immutable entries. Audit logs have 400 days of retention at no additional cost; viewing them requires appropriate IAM permissions, and the Logs Viewer role alone does not grant access to Data Access audit logs in the _Default bucket.

Pricing

Cloud Logging uses a freemium model. Standard logging storage includes the first 50 GiB per project per month at no charge; the listed storage rate is 0.50 USD per month, billed as a one-time charge for streaming logs into bucket storage and including up to 30 days of storage. No additional charge applies to querying and analyzing log data.

Vended network logs storage is 0.25 USD per month, billed as a one-time charge for streaming network telemetry into log bucket storage and including up to 30 days of bucket storage. Retaining logs beyond 30 days costs 0.01 USD per month, billed monthly according to retention. The default retention period has no retention cost, and the _Required log bucket has a fixed 400-day period with no retention charges.

Log Analytics and Logs Router are free, though routed-log destinations may charge. New Google Cloud customers can use $300 in free credits toward Cloud Logging. These terms make the free allowance and query tools attractive for modest needs, but sustained ingestion and extended retention can add costs. Customers who need help getting started are directed to contact sales.

Platforms

Cloud Logging runs as a cloud deployment and supports API, Linux and web access. It is not a self-hosted option.

Who it's for

Choose Cloud Logging if your workloads already run on Google Cloud and you want automatic collection for platform and GKE logs, VM log collection, and analysis connected to Monitoring, Error Reporting and Cloud Trace. It also suits teams that need SQL analysis in BigQuery or regional log buckets. Look elsewhere if self-hosted deployment is a requirement, or if your access model cannot accommodate the IAM permissions needed for audit logs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Google Cloud and GKE logs arrive without setup, reducing collection effort for teams already using those services.
Pro: Logs Explorer and BigQuery-backed SQL support both operational investigation and analysis alongside business data, without a query charge.
Pro: Audit entries are immutable and retain for 400 days at no additional cost.
Con: The cloud-only deployment excludes organizations that need to run logging infrastructure themselves.
Con: Storage beyond the free allowance and retention beyond 30 days can add charges, while routed destinations may have separate costs.
Con: Audit-log visibility depends on IAM permissions; Logs Viewer alone is insufficient for Data Access audit logs in the _Default bucket.

Alternatives

Log Management Software is a useful starting point for comparing the category. Consider ELK Stack if you want a freemium option with self-managed Elastic Stack features. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Logging offers a free allowance of 10 GB of log storage per month, so it may suit teams evaluating that included amount. Oracle Log Analytics includes its first 10 gigabytes of log storage free. Elastic Observability is a paid alternative with a free plan and usage-based logs and traces ingest starting at $0.09.

SparkLogs offers a free forever tier under 25 GB/month and a cloud plan at 100.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with 300 GB ingested included per month. SolarWinds Loggly has a Lite plan with 200 MB/day, seven days of retention and unlimited users; its Standard plan is 79.00 USD per month, billed annually, with 1 GB/day and 15-day retention. Sumo Logic may fit smaller teams seeking a defined free tier: 20 daily credits for logs, metrics and traces, seven-day log retention and up to three users. Amazon CloudWatch Logs is a paid, pay-as-you-go option with a listed ingestion rate of 0.50 USD per month for the first 10 TB per month in US East (N. Virginia); rates vary by region and tier.

Verdict

Cloud Logging is the right choice for Google Cloud teams that want automatic collection, BigQuery-backed analysis and integrated troubleshooting tools in one managed service. Its free storage and query features make it approachable, but factor in storage volume, longer retention and routing destinations before committing. Teams needing self-hosted deployment or a different cloud ecosystem should compare alternatives.
