Overview

Google Photos brings photo and video backup together with tools to organize, search, edit, and share a library. It is a practical fit for people who already use Google services and want one place for everyday media. The trade-off is that its free storage is shared with Gmail and Drive, so a growing photo library can compete with other files for space.

Backup can save new items automatically when enabled or let you choose what to back up manually. Full-resolution RAW images and 4K video are supported, but Original-quality backups count toward the storage quota. That makes Google Photos more compelling for people willing to manage a shared allowance or pay for more capacity than for anyone expecting an unlimited archive.

Google says Photos data is encrypted in transit with HTTPS and encrypted at rest. It also says it does not sell users’ photos, videos, or personal information, and does not use photos and videos for advertising. Users can delete or export content they add. Face Groups can be switched off; Google says face groups and labels are visible only to the user and are deleted from the account when the feature is turned off.

Key features

Editing and search

The app includes AI editing tools such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur, giving users editing options alongside their backed-up library. Face search and natural-language search examples can help find items, but the natural-language feature has narrow eligibility: users must be eligible US users aged 18 or older, use English (United States) as their account language, have Face Groups on, and enable location estimates. Anyone outside those conditions should not choose Photos on the assumption that this search option will be available.

Sharing and connections

Photos, videos, and albums can be shared with contacts who do not use Google Photos, including through apps such as WhatsApp and Snapchat. That lowers friction when sharing with people who use different services. Camera and digitization partners include Canon and Photomyne; print partners include Walgreens and Shutterfly; and supported TV platforms include Google TV and Samsung.

Pricing

The free plan includes 15 GB shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. It suits a modest library, but it is not a Photos-only allowance: email and Drive files also use the space, and Original-quality media counts against the limit.

Plan	Price	Storage and sharing
Basic	1.99 USD per month	100 GB; up to 5 additional people
Google AI Plus	9.99 USD per month	2 TB; up to 5 additional people
Google AI Pro	19.99 USD per month	5 TB; up to 5 additional people
Google One Basic (100 GB)	290.00 JPY per month	100 GB shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail; share storage with up to 5 others
Google AI Plus (2 TB)	1450.00 JPY per month	2 TB shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail; share storage with up to 5 others
Google AI Pro (5 TB)	2900.00 JPY per month	5 TB shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail; share storage with up to 5 others

Basic is the straightforward step up for a household or individual whose free allowance is running short; the larger tiers provide more room and can be shared with others. The listed plans specify storage and sharing, not additional Photos features, so choose them primarily by the capacity needed. Monthly billing avoids an annual commitment, while the shared quota remains the key constraint across tiers.

Platforms

Google Photos works on Android and iOS, and can also be used on desktop and tablet devices. That broad device coverage suits libraries accessed from both phones and computers, without requiring everyone you share with to use the app.

Who it's for

Google Photos is a strong choice for people who want automatic or manual cloud backup, useful editing tools, and straightforward sharing in one service, especially if they already use Gmail or Drive. It is less suitable for anyone who needs a large free photo-only archive, cannot meet the natural-language search eligibility rules, or wants to keep photo storage separate from other Google account files.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automatic or manual backup supports a flexible workflow; full-resolution RAW and 4K video are supported; photos, videos, and albums can reach contacts outside the service.
Pros: AI editing tools, face search, and partner connections for cameras, digitization, prints, and TVs extend the library beyond basic storage.
Cons: The free 15 GB is shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive, and Original-quality backups count against it, limiting its usefulness for large libraries.
Cons: The example natural-language search feature is restricted by location, age, language, and settings, so it is not a universal reason to choose the service.

Alternatives

For dedicated photo storage comparisons, browse Photo Storage Services; for organizing a library, see Photo Management Software. If the task is digitizing physical pictures, Photo Scanning Software and Mobile Scanning Apps are more focused starting points.

Choose FilmLab when film-photography education is the priority: it has a free educator license by request for qualifying programs and supports mobile and desktop platforms. Nostalgia is another freemium option, with a free tier that caps restores, caption/story actions, and a small Family Vault. For owners of supported Brother hardware, Brother iPrint&Scan is a free printing and scanning application, with functions varying by machine.

SlideScan by Photomyne is oriented toward slide scanning, with limited scanning, saving, and sharing on its free tier. MyHeritage Mobile App may suit users focused on family trees, though its free plan is capped at 250 people and 500 MB. PaperScan offers Windows scanning, including a free edition capped at 10-page batches. For scanning printed photographs, Photo Scan by Photomyne offers an annual plan at 59.99 USD per year after a 3-day free trial. If you prefer dedicated hardware for bulk photo scanning, Epson FastFoto is a 629.99 USD one-time purchase that includes a wireless scanner and software.

Verdict

Choose Google Photos if you want a broadly accessible service that combines backup, editing, search, and sharing, and its shared storage model fits your library. Its included 15 GB makes it easy to start, while paid capacity can accommodate larger collections. Look elsewhere if you need a substantial photo-only free quota or depend on natural-language search but do not meet its eligibility conditions.
