Overview

Gopeed is a cross-platform download manager for people handling everything from ordinary web files to torrents and magnet links. It is especially suited to users who want downloads to run remotely or fit into automated workflows, rather than only a local browser queue.

Its free, open-source model and broad protocol support make it a practical general-purpose choice; iOS self-signing and the need to secure remote deployments are meaningful trade-offs.

Key features

Gopeed supports HTTP and HTTPS, BitTorrent, magnet links, and ed2k. Torrent users get seeding, DHT, PEX, uTP, WebTorrent, UPnP, and daily tracker-list updates. That combination suits varied download workloads, though people who only need a basic file queue may not need its wider set of capabilities.

JavaScript extensions can add download sources such as YouTube, HuggingFace, and cloud storage. Browser add-ons for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can capture download links automatically, saving manual copying when moving downloads out of the browser.

For programmatic control, Gopeed offers an HTTP REST API and an official JavaScript SDK to create and manage tasks. Webhooks can report completion or failure to services including Gotify, Bark, WeCom, DingTalk, and Telegram Bot, making it a better fit for automated workflows than a manager limited to manual monitoring.

The Web version and Docker deployment support remote download services with configurable authentication. Remote access is useful when downloads should run apart from a user's current device, but it makes access control the operator's responsibility: Gopeed's API documentation recommends an API token, and public Web deployments should enable identity authentication. The project is GPLv3-licensed and has no ads or tracking.

Pricing

Gopeed’s Free plan is free and includes all core download features, with no ads or hidden paywalls. It is the straightforward choice for individuals who want the full core product without a paid tier; there are no cheaper plans or paid upgrades to weigh against it.

Platforms

Gopeed supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and Web. Portable versions are available, and remote control is supported. The iOS build is distributed as an IPA for self-signing because BitTorrent-related apps are not allowed on the App Store, so iPhone and iPad users must accept a less direct installation route. On Windows, the installation guide warns that antivirus software may falsely flag host.exe and updater.exe; downloading from official sources is recommended.

Who it's for

Gopeed makes sense for users who want one manager across desktop and mobile platforms, especially those combining web downloads with torrents. It is a stronger fit for people who value source extensions, browser link capture, scripting, notifications, or a remote service than for someone seeking only a simple local downloader. Operators should be comfortable configuring authentication before exposing remote access.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad protocol coverage, including a substantial set of BitTorrent features, handles more than standard HTTP downloads.
Pros: Extensions, browser capture, an API, an SDK, and event webhooks offer several ways to extend or automate download workflows.
Pros: The free plan includes all core features, with no ads or hidden paywalls; the project is open source under GPLv3.
Cons: iOS users must self-sign an IPA rather than install through the App Store.
Cons: Remote Web deployments need deliberate authentication configuration, including an API token and identity authentication for public deployments.
Cons: Windows antivirus software may falsely flag host.exe and updater.exe, which can complicate installation.

Alternatives

Download Manager Software is a broader directory for comparing download managers. Consider 4K Video Downloader+ instead if its basic-feature Starter plan or its freemium model better suits your needs. JDownloader is another free, open-source option for readers comparing download managers. AB Download Manager is a free, open-source alternative. BitComet may suit private, personal, non-commercial use. pyLoad is another free, open-source option. Firelink offers a free MIT-licensed browser companion. Free Download Manager is free, ad-free, and accepts optional donations. Mipony is another option for readers comparing download managers.

Verdict

Choose Gopeed if you want a free download manager that spans mainstream protocols, extensions, automation, and remote control. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; look elsewhere if you need a conventional App Store installation on iOS or do not want to manage authentication for a remote service.
