Overview

Grai combines automated discovery, column-level lineage, impact analysis, pipeline lineage, and report lineage. Centralized validation tests run when upstream sources change, while GitHub Actions can alert CI/CD workflows when production changes affect warehouses or dbt projects. That makes it a stronger fit for teams managing evolving data dependencies than for those who only need a static inventory.

The project is open source under an MIT-0 license and can be self-hosted, with Docker Compose and Kubernetes examples and Helm charts. Grai Cloud is also free to run. Self-hosting suits teams that want control of their hosting environment; cloud avoids operating the service. The privacy policy says Grai collects email addresses, cookies, and usage data, and uses AWS and Google Cloud Platform as service providers. It describes commercially acceptable protection measures but does not guarantee absolute security.

Key features

Automated, column-level lineage: Grai can map data relationships across warehouses and production services. Column-level detail can help teams assess which downstream assets may be affected by a change.
Change-triggered validation: Centralized tests run when upstream data sources change, helping teams check dependencies as they evolve rather than relying only on periodic review.
CI/CD alerts: GitHub Actions can alert workflows when production changes affect warehouses or dbt projects. This is most relevant to teams that already use those workflows to manage data changes.
Connectors: Connectors include Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, dbt, Fivetran, flat files, Metabase, and Looker. Looker is marked alpha, so teams relying on that connector should treat its status as a qualification.
Developer tools: The web application uses React, and the Grai CLI is a Python client library for interacting with the server. These fit a deployment model built around a server and programmatic access.

Pricing

Grai Cloud is free. The free cloud option makes it possible to use Grai without a subscription price, while self-hosting is another route for teams that want to run the open-source project in their own environment. No seat or usage caps are stated for the cloud plan, so teams should not assume a particular allowance.

Platforms

Grai supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms. The web application provides a browser-facing interface; the Python CLI supports interaction with the Grai server. Teams can choose the free cloud service or deploy themselves using the project's container and Kubernetes materials.

Who it's for

Grai is aimed at people who need to understand and test relationships across data systems and applications. It is a good fit for data teams that want column-level visibility, checks triggered by upstream changes, and CI/CD alerts, especially when their stack is represented among the connectors. It is less compelling when connector coverage is uncertain or when teams do not need change-aware validation.

Pros and cons

Pros

Lineage paired with validation: Change-triggered tests add a way to check dependencies as upstream data changes.
Workflow integration: GitHub Actions can alert CI/CD processes about production changes affecting warehouses or dbt projects.
Deployment choice: Free cloud and self-hosting give teams different ways to run the service.

Cons

Looker is alpha: Teams with Looker at the center of their reporting stack face a less mature connector.
Security is not absolute: Grai says it uses commercially acceptable safeguards but cannot guarantee absolute security, a relevant caveat for teams assessing sensitive data services.

Alternatives

Data Lineage Tools is a broader category to browse when comparing lineage products. Choose Atlas instead if an open-core database engine with a free plan and free trial, plus macOS or Windows support, better matches your requirements. Coalesce Catalog offers a free Developer plan for one user with Transform and Quality, capped monthly actions, one project, and one environment; its Starter plan is 150.00 USD per month.

Databricks Notebooks is an alternative with a free edition limited to one serverless workspace and limited compute size and usage, or pay-as-you-go billing. Apache Atlas is free metadata governance software with no paid plans or usage limits stated. Collate may suit teams comparing an OpenMetadata core under Apache 2.0 with a Community License for its UI and connectors.

Alex Solutions is a paid alternative with an annual enterprise platform plan described as including unlimited users, sources, solutions, features, and integrations. Amazon DataZone has a pay-as-you-go option with charges tied to requests, metadata storage, compute, and AI recommendation tokens. CastorDoc is a paid alternative with plans that specify user, integration, and data-asset allowances.

Verdict

Choose Grai if your data team needs column-level lineage linked to change-triggered validation and CI/CD alerts, and its connectors cover your systems. Free cloud and self-hosting make it a practical option to consider. Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on a mature Looker connector or requires stronger security guarantees.
