In their own words
Grist
Grist combines spreadsheet analysis with database-style organization for complex data work. It structures information relationally while supporting Python formulas and Excel-like spreadsheet functions. Pages can present tables, cards, forms, charts, calendars and custom widgets, and access rules can govern visibility or editing at the table, column and record level. A REST API supports programmatic reading and modification of documents, workspaces and team sites; integrations include Zapier, Integrately, Pabbly Connect, n8n and Make. Grist is available as a hosted service, a free open-source Community edition for self-hosting, and a desktop app that works without internet access or an online account. Documents are SQLite databases and can be exported as.grist files. Hosted Grist uses AWS infrastructure, HTTPS, encrypted storage and backups, and optional MFA, but has not undergone certification or auditing for SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA or GDPR compliance. The free plan allows up to 5,000 records per document; a 30-day trial is listed.
Rows
Rows is a spreadsheet platform for analyzing data, building reports, and connecting information from other tools. Its AI can extract data from documents, create reports, merge datasets, and perform advanced analysis; users can describe a task rather than work through formulas and menus. Rows connects to social media, data warehouses, advertising and back-office platforms, and other sources. RowsX imports tables from thousands of websites, while connected data can refresh automatically from every minute to every month. A spreadsheet can combine live data from more than 50 sources. Reports and interactive dashboards can be shared on any device and embedded elsewhere, and teams can collaborate in real time. The free plan is free forever and does not require a trial period or credit card. It includes five AI tasks per month, manual imports, ten integration accounts, up to three guests, a 1 MB file import size, and 500 API calls per month. Paid pricing starts at $6/user/mo (annual); applicable sales tax or VAT is extra. The listed platform is API.
