Overview

Shared links carry a changeable groove: recipients can revise it and send along another version. That makes mpump useful for asynchronous idea-sharing, though it is not just a way to distribute finished audio. The maker says music stays on the user’s device and that the app uses no accounts or personal tracking. Its source is published under the AGPL-3.0 license.

Key features

The instrument set combines drums, bass, synth, mixer, and effects with real-time synthesis. Patterns, arpeggiators, and Euclidean rhythms provide several approaches to sequencing, while hybrid sequencing, MIDI support, sample import, and live-performance tools give it scope beyond a basic drum machine. WAV recording captures audio; JSON export and import preserve session data for later editing.

The PWA supports offline use after its first load, which is useful for continuing work without a connection. MIDI clock synchronization and an Ableton Link bridge connect mpump with Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Bitwig, Traktor, djay, and other Link-enabled apps. Live Jam accommodates up to 4 peers and Live Set up to 49 listeners, but both are opt-in and the public hosted relay is offline. Those features currently require users to provide their own relay, a substantial setup burden for anyone expecting collaboration to work out of the box.

Pricing

The Free plan is free. It includes the browser groovebox, drums, bass, synth, effects, and shareable beat links. There are no paid tiers or stated seat or usage caps to weigh against the free option. This is a straightforward choice for beat-makers who want to work in the browser without a subscription; the trade-off is the relay requirement for live features, not a higher-priced plan with managed collaboration.

Platforms

The product supports Android, iOS, and web, while the Free plan is specified for web. The browser-based workflow and offline-capable PWA suit people who want a portable tool; the free-plan terms do not establish equivalent plan coverage for mobile platforms.

Who it's for

Choose mpump for free beat sketching, editable link-based exchanges, or a browser-based groovebox that can connect to Link-enabled music apps. It is less suitable for groups that need live collaboration without configuring infrastructure, or buyers seeking a conventional installed desktop tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access includes the core groovebox and shareable links, with no account or personal tracking according to the maker.
Pros: WAV recording, JSON session exchange, MIDI clock, and Ableton Link give users several ways to carry work into other workflows.
Cons: Live Jam and Live Set depend on a user-provided relay while the public relay is offline.
Cons: The Free plan is specified for web, so its stated terms do not clarify plan coverage on Android or iOS.

Alternatives

Drum Machine Software is a broader category to browse if mpump’s particular browser-and-link workflow is not the right fit.

For a cross-platform music-production app with a free version, consider Zenbeats, which supports Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. Choose it instead if desktop platform coverage matters more than mpump’s shareable beat links.

Atlas 2 is a paid option with a free trial for Linux, macOS, and Windows; its full version costs 99.00 USD per once and installs on 3 machines. It is a better candidate if you need a desktop tool across those platforms and accept a one-time purchase.

Beatmaker 3 offers paid, genre-focused drum instruments, from an individual title at 49.00 USD per once to a 17-instrument bundle at 99.50 USD per once. Choose it if that instrument-focused purchasing model suits you better than a free browser groovebox.

Playbeat 4 is a paid alternative with a free trial for iOS, macOS, and Windows. Consider it if those platforms are a better match than mpump’s web-centered free plan.

DrumComputer is a paid alternative with a free trial and a 129.00 USD per once full version. It may suit buyers who prefer that purchase model to mpump’s free browser tool.

Redrum offers Reason Rack or Reason as paid purchases, for macOS and Windows. Consider it if you want one of those products instead of mpump’s browser groovebox.

XO is a paid macOS and Windows option, with a 76.20 GBP per once plan or a 95.40 GBP per once plan that includes 4 expansions. Choose it if a paid desktop option is preferable to mpump’s free browser workflow.

0x808 is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

mpump is a strong fit for beat-makers who want free browser-based creation and editable sharing without accounts. Its mix of sequencing, export, and music-app integrations gives it practical range. Look elsewhere if live collaboration must work through a hosted relay: supplying your own is the key limitation.
