Overview

VerbTeX is a LaTeX editor built around mobile work, with local editing and synchronized cloud projects. It is most compelling for people who need to edit or compile away from a desktop and want a choice between device-only and cloud workflows. Its engine and bibliography support are broad, but the free plan’s tight project and document caps make it a poor home for a growing research library.

Key features

PDF generation supports PdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX, while bibliographies can use BibTeX or Biber. That range accommodates different LaTeX setups without limiting the choice of compiler or bibliography system.

The distinction between Local Mode and Cloud Mode is central. Local Mode keeps .tex documents on the device, supports offline editing and compilation, and does not require an account. Cloud Mode synchronizes projects with Verbosus and adds a web interface, which is more useful for moving between devices but makes the service part of the workflow.

Dropbox, Box, Git and iCloud connect file storage and version-control workflows; Zotero and Mendeley cover reference management. The app also includes an AI assistant using ChatGPT and Claude. These integrations widen the ways a project can fit into existing work, though code completion is a Pro feature.

There are no ads. Cloud Mode supports two-factor authentication in combination with Copiosus, and Pro encrypts content transmission with TLS. Apple's listing says the developer reports that the app collects no data.

Pricing

VerbTeX Free costs 0.00 USD per free. It allows 2 local projects, 2 documents per local project and 2 file uploads per local project, plus 2 cloud projects with 2 documents per cloud project. Those limits suit a small number of active documents or an initial trial, but are restrictive for users maintaining several papers or substantial projects.

Upgrade: Subscription costs 3.99 USD per month and adds code completion and unlimited projects and documents. It is the fit for users who need room to grow but prefer a recurring charge. Upgrade: Forever costs 8.99 USD per once and offers the same stated additions, making it the lower-cost choice for someone who expects to keep using VerbTeX. The free plan gives up code completion and unlimited capacity; no separate upload allowance is stated for either Pro plan.

Platforms

VerbTeX supports Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac and a web interface. Its mobile emphasis and offline Local Mode make it suited to editing on the move, while the web interface gives Cloud Mode a browser-based route. Windows is not among its supported platforms.

Who it's for

VerbTeX is a sensible choice for mobile LaTeX users who value offline compilation, cloud synchronization, or integrations with reference managers and storage services. It is less suitable for people who need generous free project capacity, want code completion without upgrading, or require a Windows app.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline editing and compilation without an account in Local Mode are useful for private, disconnected work.
Pros: PdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX, BibTeX and Biber cover major compilation and bibliography choices.
Pros: Pro removes project and document limits and adds code completion, with a one-time option at 8.99 USD per once.
Cons: The free tier’s caps of 2 projects per mode and 2 documents per project constrain anything beyond a small workload.
Cons: The stated platform range does not include Windows, narrowing its fit for users centered on that desktop operating system.

Alternatives

LaTeX Editors is the broader category to browse if VerbTeX’s mobile-and-cloud combination is not the right fit.

JianTeX is worth considering if Linux support, a desktop app, or a self-hosted option matters; its free and open-source plan also includes an online version.
TeXstudio is a better match for a free desktop editor on Linux, macOS or Windows, with use and modification under GPL v2.
Verbosus offers an alternative freemium option on Android, iOS and web.
Oleafly suits someone seeking a free desktop app for Linux, macOS or Windows without a subscription; paid AI providers may charge for usage.
Texifier is a paid alternative with a free trial and support for iOS, macOS and Windows.
Texmaker is a free Linux, macOS and Windows editor if a separately installed LaTeX distribution is acceptable.
Texpile is another free offline desktop editor for Linux, macOS and Windows.
TeXworks is a free, open-source desktop application for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose VerbTeX if mobile LaTeX work, offline compilation and the option to sync projects are the priorities. Its mix of engines, bibliography systems and integrations is useful, but the free tier is too constrained for sustained project growth. Look elsewhere if you need a Windows app or want a desktop-first editor.
