Overview

Habits can recur daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly, with progress measured by repetitions, time, or a target quantity. That suits routines that do not fit a simple daily checkbox. The maker says streak counts are not the main indicator, a useful distinction for people who want to track progress without making an uninterrupted run the goal. Tasks and notes share the same personal organizer, though this is not positioned as a team-planning tool.

Data handling is a significant choice. The web app works offline and stores data on the device, but has no online sync. The self-hosted Docker version stores data online and requires an internet connection. The web version therefore favors offline use and local control; users wanting connected storage must choose the Docker deployment.

Key features

Flexible habit schedules: Daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly repetition, plus measurement by count, time, or target quantity, accommodates more than simple streak-based routines. Habits can also be skipped or paused.
Tasks and notes: Tasks support planned dates and times, durations, checklists, and timers. Markdown notes make the app a practical home for related personal planning, not just habit logging.
Organization: Categories and priorities apply to habits, tasks, and notes; lists can be searched, filtered, and sorted. This helps keep a mixed set of personal items manageable.
Notifications: Daily due-item summaries and reminders before planned task times can help with follow-through, but availability depends on platform and whether the app is open. Habit reminders are not included in the plan, so this is not the right pick for users who depend on habit-specific alerts.
Portable data: Import from Google Keep and use Markdown, YAML, JSON, or TSV for file import and export. Multiple formats make it easier to move or reuse personal data than a tracker limited to its own interface.
Accessibility and privacy: The maker says the app supports keyboard navigation, screen readers, and reduced-motion preferences, and has no trackers or account requirement. It is available in 20 languages.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and has no ads, subscription, or in-app purchases. It includes data export and the listed platform support, with habit skip and pause controls. That makes it a straightforward fit for an individual who wants the full stated offering without a recurring charge; there is no paid tier to weigh against the free plan. The key concession is functional rather than financial: habit reminders are absent, and notification behavior varies by platform and app status.

Platforms

OpenHabitTracker supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and self-hosting. That range gives users several ways to access the organizer, but does not mean data automatically follows them: the web app stores data on-device without online sync, while the Docker version stores data online and needs an internet connection. The maker describes it as a personal project and welcomes feedback on Reddit and GitHub.

Who it's for

Choose OpenHabitTracker if you want one free place for habits, task details, and Markdown notes; value export options and accessibility support; or prefer an offline web app without an account. It is less suitable if you expect seamless online synchronization from the web app, habit-specific reminders, or a dedicated shared workflow. Its personal-project framing fits an individual organizer better than a business-critical system.

Pros and cons

Pro: Habits can use four recurrence patterns and three measurement styles, so the tracker can represent more than daily streaks.
Pro: Tasks, notes, categories, priorities, and searchable lists bring routine tracking and adjacent planning together.
Pro: Markdown, YAML, JSON, and TSV import/export give users several routes for moving data.
Pro: No ads, subscription, in-app purchases, trackers, or account requirement make the free personal option uncomplicated.
Con: The web app has no online sync, so its offline convenience does not extend to automatic cross-device continuity.
Con: Habit reminders are unavailable, and other notification support depends on platform and app status.

Alternatives

Habit Tracker Apps is the broader directory list for comparing more habit tools. Consider Habitify instead if its paid Premium plan's advanced reminders, break mode, calendar and Apple Health integrations, and API matter more than OpenHabitTracker's no-cost plan. Commitments is another free option, with a free trial and a platform range limited to iOS, macOS, and Windows.

Table Habit (mHabit) is worth considering if you want a free, offline-first tracker with no account requirement on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, or Windows. Everyday may fit someone focused on a smaller habit set: its free plan allows up to three habits. HabitBull offers a free plan capped at five habits and a one-week Premium trial.

Habo is an alternative if an open-source habit tracker and optional paid cloud backups or multi-device sync suit your needs. Choose Coach.me if community Q&A, encouragement, or paid habit coaching is a priority. Way of Life is another freemium habit-tracking option for Android, iOS, and macOS.

Verdict

OpenHabitTracker is a strong fit for an individual who wants flexible habit tracking alongside detailed tasks and Markdown notes, without paying or surrendering an account. Its broad export support and platform coverage add practical freedom. Look elsewhere if automatic web sync or habit reminders are essential; those are the clearest limits on an otherwise capable free organizer.
