Overview

HammerAI pairs character roleplay with tools for story creation, images, group chats, lorebooks, and personas. It suits readers who want several creative tools in one place or want to run models locally on desktop; the main trade-off is that cloud features depend on an internet connection and subscription credits expire each billing period.

Key features

Character conversations sit alongside story writing and group chat, while lorebooks and personas provide tools for shaping fictional settings and characters. Image generation adds a visual option, but it is one of the uses drawing on credits for paid subscribers. Persistent memory is supported, though its operation is not detailed.

The desktop app runs local models through Ollama and Llama.cpp. Ollama support covers more than 20 LLMs, and users can bring an Ollama Modelfile. After downloading models, local-model use works offline; cloud LLMs, image generation, and text-to-speech require internet access. This makes HammerAI a stronger fit for users prepared to manage local models than for anyone expecting every feature to work offline.

HammerAI says it does not collect information about conversations or use user content to train or fine-tune its models. Third-party AI providers may process or retain messages sent to them, so users choosing cloud services should account for that distinction. Chats and characters are stored on-device by default in the iOS and Android apps. The service is for users at least 18 or the local age of consent, whichever is greater, and filters content including self-harm encouragement, graphic violence, and hate speech.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 600 cloud messages per day, an 8,192-token context, two cloud LLMs, local LLMs, and an LLM API proxy. It is a substantial way to try the service, but daily cloud-message limits and the smaller context and model selection make it less suited to sustained cloud use than paid plans.

Subscriptions add unlimited cloud messages and expand context and cloud-model access, as well as a monthly credit allowance:

Starter — 9.00 USD per month: 1,500 credits/month, enough for 150 images or 300 TTS, a 16,384-token context, and four cloud LLMs. It fits regular users who want fewer message constraints without the larger allowances.
Advanced — 18.00 USD per month: 3,500 credits/month, or 350 images or 700 TTS, a 32,768-token context, and seven cloud LLMs. It suits heavier creative use and longer context needs.
Ultimate — 35.00 USD per month: 9,000 credits/month, or 900 images or 1,800 TTS, a 65,536-token context, and 14 cloud LLMs. This is the choice for users who will make regular use of the larger credit and model allowances.

Monthly subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period and do not roll over, so a larger tier is worthwhile only if its allowance matches actual use. One-time credit packs preserve a different kind of flexibility: Tiny costs 1.99 USD per once for 200 credits (20 images or 40 TTS); Small is 4.99 USD per once for 600 credits (60 images or 120 TTS); Medium is 9.99 USD per once for 1,300 credits (130 images or 260 TTS); Large is 19.99 USD per once for 3,000 credits (300 images or 600 TTS); Mega is 49.99 USD per once for 8,500 credits (850 images or 1,700 TTS); and Ultra is 99.99 USD per once for 20,000 credits (2,000 images or 4,000 TTS). Purchased credits never expire. These packs suit occasional image or speech generation better than a subscription, but they do not provide the subscriptions' expanded context and cloud-LLM allowances.

Platforms

HammerAI is available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Desktop downloads include macOS Apple Silicon, Windows, and Linux packages for Debian, Flatpak, and RPM. The desktop app is the route for local-model support; mobile apps are available on both major mobile platforms and store chats and characters on-device by default.

Who it's for

Choose HammerAI if character roleplay is only part of the job and you also want story tools, group chat, and world-building features, or if local models and offline desktop use matter. It is less compelling if you need image generation, text-to-speech, or cloud AI to work offline, or if expiring monthly credits would not fit your usage pattern.

Pros and cons

Pro: Local models work offline after download, giving desktop users an alternative to cloud services.
Pro: A free plan combines 600 daily cloud messages with local LLMs and an API proxy.
Pro: Purchased credit packs never expire, a useful fit for intermittent image or TTS use.
Con: Subscription credits expire monthly, so unused allowance is lost rather than carried forward.
Con: Cloud AI, image generation, and TTS need internet access, limiting offline use to local models.
Con: Cloud providers may process or retain messages, unlike HammerAI's stated approach to conversation data.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see AI Roleplay Chatbots.

Nastia is worth considering if its free uncensored chat and daily token limits suit you, or if its 15.99 USD per month Unlimited plan fits better. Pick SillyTavern if a free, open-source option across desktop, web, and self-hosted platforms is the priority. VerseRP may suit readers looking for a free plan with unlimited Verse Free messages, full access to characters and creator tools, and 50 successful Verse Echo replies per UTC day.

Backyard AI offers a free plan with 300 messages per week, one included model, and 16k max memory; consider it if those limits match your needs. CrushOn.AI gives free users unlimited chats on free AI models, 100 monthly Pro Model credits, and 20 daily Inspiration Replies, making it an option for readers who value those specific allowances. Plotto may be a fit for basic story-room chat without a message fee or limit, though other actions may cost coins or require payment.

Talkie is another freemium alternative. Rubii may suit readers drawn to its Plus plan, which includes 800 Rubies, a stated estimate of about 1,600 messages or 400 images, and a 200 Plus daily free quota.

Verdict

HammerAI is a strong choice for character-chat readers who also want creative world-building tools and the option to run local models on desktop. Its free daily cloud allowance and offline local use give it a practical starting point; choose another service if cloud features must work offline or if monthly credit expiry makes subscriptions a poor match.
