Overview

The app centers on guided print handwriting rather than general writing instruction. Adults can tune letter size and difficulty and decide whether children see a model; this makes the practice adaptable, though it remains a tracing-first approach. Animated rewards and games add variety, while reports and printable worksheets give adults ways to review or continue practice away from the screen.

Key features

Writing Wizard guides children through correct letter tracing. The adjustable model and difficulty settings are useful when a learner needs more support or a greater challenge. It also supports pen-control exercises, but the writing mode is print, not cursive.

Children can trace with animated stickers and sound effects, play four games that animate letters, and collect stars in 5-Stars mode. These features add short, playful variations on practice; families looking for a broad set of writing activities may find the focus narrow.

Parents and teachers can make word lists and record audio for each word, which can tailor practice to a child’s vocabulary. Detailed reports show traced work and allow adults to replay and export tracings. The app also creates PDF handwriting worksheets for printing or email, useful for carrying practice onto paper.

Word lists can be shared through iCloud Drive or other cloud providers, an ad hoc network, or email. Some settings can be configured remotely with MDM, and word lists can be pushed to devices. School versions support iPad and Android or Chromebook deployments. The maker says app data and activity stay on the device, are not sent outside it, and that its apps contain no ads; it also says it receives no student personally identifiable information or education records. Windows users can request an installer from the maker.

Pricing

The free app costs 0.00 USD per free and is a limited download: remaining letters and custom words require an in-app purchase or subscription. The paid choices let families and schools pay for particular content or full access:

Full Access - Monthly: 2.49 USD per month, billed monthly, for full access. This spreads the cost over time but continues as a monthly payment.
Add Your Words and Word Lists: 5.99 USD per once for custom words and word lists. Choose it if personalization is the priority; it does not include all letters and numbers.
All Letters and Numbers: 5.99 USD per once for letters and numbers. It does not include the custom-word and word-list add-on.
Lifetime Full Access: 9.99 USD per once for full access. For ongoing use, this avoids a monthly bill and costs less than four months of the monthly plan.

Schools buying more than 20 iPad licenses receive a 50% discount. Schools cannot purchase in-app purchases through Apple School Manager or MDM, so that restriction matters when choosing a deployment route.

Platforms

Writing Wizard supports iOS, Android, and Windows. The maker says a Windows installer is available upon request. School versions are available for iPad and Android or Chromebook deployments.

Who it's for

The app is described as suitable for toddlers, early learners, preschool, kindergarten, and first grade children. It is a good fit for adults who want to adjust tracing practice, make custom word lists, and review or export a child’s work. It is less suited to anyone seeking cursive instruction or a broader writing curriculum.

Pros and cons

Adjustable tracing: Letter size, difficulty, and model visibility let adults tune the support to a learner.
Useful follow-through: Reports, replayable and exportable tracings, and printable PDF worksheets give adults practical ways to review work and extend practice.
Personalized words: Custom lists with recorded audio can make practice more relevant to a child.
Content split across purchases: The one-time letter and word-list options are separate, while the free download omits remaining letters and custom words; buyers need to choose the coverage they need.
Print-only focus: It is built around print tracing, so it is not a fit for cursive practice or broader writing instruction.

Alternatives

Browse Handwriting Practice Apps for more options. Choose Kanji Dojo instead for open-source writing practice across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. LetterSchool is another freemium option with a free trial and a limited free app covering its first five uppercase and lowercase letters, five shapes, and three CVC flashcards.

Handwriting Repeater is a free alternative with no subscription fees, premium tier, account requirement, or limits on sentences or repetitions, and runs on Android, iOS, and web. For Japanese kanji practice, Hanzi Writer offers core writing practice free, with a Pro monthly plan priced in-app. Nazoru gives free users two full practices per day and syncs with WaniKani, Bunpro, and MaruMori; consider it for that kind of Japanese study rather than children’s handwriting.

Skritter is a paid option with a 7-day free trial and a 14.99 USD monthly plan. Copybook Club is an iOS alternative whose free plan includes three worksheet generations per week, up to two pages per worksheet, and PDF export. Cursive: Learn Cursive is another freemium option for readers comparing cursive apps.

Verdict

Writing Wizard is best for parents and early-years educators who want guided, adjustable print tracing with progress review and paper worksheets. Its custom lists and reports make it more than a basic tracing activity, but the separate content purchases and print-only scope are real constraints. Choose it for focused early handwriting practice; look elsewhere for cursive or a wider writing curriculum.
