Overview

HLA combines readability measures, plain-language suggestions, and a structured document assessment. Its Word-based desktop edition lets users work in the document itself rather than transferring text into another program. HLA Online instead provides browser-based review and saves documents alongside their scores and details, which can make ongoing revisions easier to track.

The ReadEasy Document Assessment considers readability alongside content, design, and cultural appropriateness. That wider lens is useful when a document must work as health communication, not merely meet a target score. It also means HLA is a more specialized choice than a basic checker; occasional writers may not make enough use of the additional review to justify the annual license.

Key features

Readability and language review

HLA reports nine readability scores and supports grade-level analysis and sentence-complexity review. Its measures include Fry-Based, Precise SMOG, Gunning-Fog, ARI, Flesch-Kincaid, Dale-Chall, FORCAST, and Coleman-Liau. Multiple indices let reviewers examine text through different scoring methods instead of treating one score as definitive.

The software highlights complicated words, words with three or more syllables, and long sentences. Its interactive Search and Replace feature offers plain-language alternatives and descriptions for more than 12,000 difficult words, phrases, and medical jargon. This gives writers concrete revision prompts, although suggestions still need human judgment to preserve the intended meaning.

Desktop and online workflows

The desktop edition works entirely within Microsoft Word, a practical fit for people whose document work already happens there. HLA Online assesses and improves readability in a web application, saves documents in one place, and retains their scores and details. It works in browsers on computers, tablets, and mobile devices running Windows, Macintosh, Android, or iOS.

HLA Online is hosted on a private remote server described as HIPAA compliant. Health Literacy Innovations says it will not track or collect information about users, their data or documents, or their use of the software unless specifically authorized. Those assurances may matter to organizations handling sensitive health content, but the desktop and online editions remain individual licenses rather than shared seats.

Pricing

HLA is paid software with a free trial. Each license runs for 365 days from activation and is assigned to one identified individual; it cannot be shared or transferred without HLI's written permission. That restriction makes the product a better fit for a named specialist than a team seeking a common seat pool.

Health Literacy Advisor Online — English: 499.00 USD per year, billed single, for a new single license. Choose it for browser access and saved online documents.
Health Literacy Advisor Desktop — English: 499.00 USD per year, billed single, for a new single license. It suits a Word-centered workflow without online storage.
Health Literacy Advisor Online — English & Spanish: 599.00 USD per year, billed single, for a new single license. This is the online option for work in both languages.
Health Literacy Advisor Desktop — English & Spanish: 599.00 USD per year, billed single, for a new single license. It adds Spanish access to the Word-based workflow.
Volume Pricing: custom pricing for multiple licenses, with discounts of 10% for 2 years, 15% for 3 years, and 20% for 4 years.

The English & Spanish editions cost 100.00 USD more per year than their English-only counterparts. The lower-priced English licenses give up Spanish access, not the core desktop or online workflow. The multi-license option is the relevant route for organizations, but the individual-license restriction still matters and the term discounts require a longer commitment.

Platforms

The desktop edition is built to work within Microsoft Word, while HLA Online runs in a browser on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. Its supported operating systems include Windows, Macintosh, Android, and iOS. The platform breadth gives users options across devices, but the online application is the choice for browser access and document storage.

Who it's for

HLA is best suited to health communicators, editors, and other professionals who repeatedly review health documents and need plain-language guidance plus assessment of content, design, and cultural appropriateness. The Word edition fits those who work primarily in Microsoft Word; HLA Online suits those who value saved documents and access across devices. It is less compelling for a casual user who needs only a quick readability check, or for a team that expects one license to be shared.

Alternatives

For a free starting point, ToolsVale Readability Checker has a free plan and supports web and mobile platforms; choose it when HLA's annual individual license is more than your needs warrant. Hemingway Editor is a freemium alternative with annual individual plans at 8.33 USD per month for 5,000 AI sentences and 12.50 USD per month for 10,000 AI sentences; it may suit readers looking for a lower-cost writing editor rather than HLA's health-focused assessment.

Readability is a free, MIT-licensed GitHub Action, CLI, and Docker image, making it the alternative to consider for a technical workflow. APIVerve Website Readability API offers an API-oriented freemium option, including a free plan with 200 credits per month, 5 requests per minute, non-commercial use, required attribution, and community support; choose it when an API is the right form factor.

Text Inspector has a free plan capped at 250 words and automatically deletes data after six hours, so it is an option for short checks where that limit and retention window fit. Readability Formulas offers free online calculators and a Readability Scoring System for readers seeking free scoring tools. Eclipse Readability Studio is free and open source, with Linux, macOS, and Windows support. PageRefine is a free web tool with no signup.

Verdict

Choose Health Literacy Advisor if health documents are a regular part of your work and you need multiple readability measures, plain-language alternatives, and a structured review of communication quality. Its Word integration and saved online workflow make it a substantial specialist toolkit. Look elsewhere if you need an inexpensive occasional checker or licenses that can be shared across a team: the annual cost and named-user restriction are central terms of the purchase.
