Overview

HeyGen is an AI video platform for making presenter-led clips and localized versions from text, images, audio, or presentation files. It suits creators and teams that want avatar and translation tools in the same production workflow. Its breadth is compelling, but the free allowance is too small for sustained use.

Key features

Generation can start from text, images, audio, or PPT and PDF files, and users can also make videos with AI avatars. That flexibility is useful when source material varies; it is less compelling if the need is limited to one narrowly defined video task. Avatar lip-sync and translation support more than 175 languages and dialects, making localization a notable strength.

AI Studio keeps generated motion elements editable: users can change text, color, timing, and layout after generation. That gives creators room to refine a clip rather than accept a fixed render. HeyGen says many videos are ready within a minute, while complex ones can take a few minutes.

Team tools include comments, tagging, multi-user editing, shared workspaces, and task management. Business and Enterprise add centralized billing, role management, SSO, and SCIM provisioning. Business also integrates with n8n, Make, HubSpot, Zapier, and LMS platforms. Custom avatars require identity verification on camera by the person depicted, an important safeguard for teams commissioning them.

Paid plans include live chat support; Enterprise adds priority support and customer success management. HeyGen supports commercial use and API access. Its security markers include GDPR, SOC 2 Type II, CCPA, AI Act, and DPF, alongside annual penetration testing, vulnerability management, and continuous monitoring.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows three videos monthly, each up to one minute. It includes 500+ stock video avatars and one custom video avatar. That is enough to try the workflow, but the strict cap makes it a poor fit for regular publishing. HeyGen also offers limited access to premium features without requiring a credit card.

Creator costs 29.00 USD per month billed monthly, or 24.00 USD per month billed annually. Both provide 600 credits per month; Creator allows videos up to 30 minutes and exports at 1080p, with 175+ languages and dialects. The annual option lowers the monthly price but requires an annual subscription. This tier suits individual creators who can work within 1080p and the 600-credit allowance.

Pro is 49.00 USD per month billed monthly, with 1,000 credits, videos up to 30 minutes, and 4K export. It is the step up for users who need more credits or sharper output, though it does not raise the duration limit over Creator.

Business costs 149.00 USD per month and includes 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 minutes, and 4K export. Additional seats cost $20 per seat per month, so team costs rise with headcount. Its longer duration, integrations, and administrative controls make it a better fit for coordinated production than the individual tiers.

Enterprise has custom pricing, no maximum video duration, 4K export, SCIM provisioning, and priority support. It is aimed at organizations that need enterprise administration and support rather than a fixed self-serve quota.

Cancellation stops renewal, but paid features and credits remain active until the current billing cycle ends. That gives subscribers the remainder of the paid period to use their allocation.

Platforms

HeyGen runs on the web, Android, and iOS, and offers API access. Cloud and mobile deployment support both browser-based production and mobile use.

Who it's for

HeyGen is a strong fit for solo creators and businesses producing avatar-led videos, multilingual versions, or clips from varied source materials. Its 175-plus language support and editable output are especially useful when a video needs adaptation after generation. Occasional users can start free, but three short videos per month will quickly constrain a recurring workflow. Those needing 4K should budget for Pro or above; teams requiring longer videos or centralized administration should consider Business or Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pros: Text, image, audio, and presentation inputs give users several ways to start a video.
Pros: Lip-sync and translation across more than 175 languages and dialects serve localization work.
Pros: Editable motion elements allow changes to text, color, timing, and layout after generation.
Cons: The free plan limits users to three videos a month and one minute per video, leaving little room for ongoing production.
Cons: Creator exports top out at 1080p; 4K requires Pro or a higher plan.
Cons: Business seats add $20 per seat per month, raising the cost as teams grow.

Alternatives

For a dubbing-first workflow, Perso Dubbing offers a free sign-up generation with dubbing, speech-to-text, and audio separation, rather than HeyGen's broader video-generation inputs and avatar workflow.

Vidby may suit readers focused on translation: its free plan includes 30 credits and 70 languages, with a watermark, while HeyGen combines translation with avatar and video creation.

Translate.Video is another option for translation-focused work; its free plan has zero dubbing and caption minutes, while HeyGen's free plan allows three videos monthly.

CAMB.AI offers a free one-time 5K-credit allowance, an alternative for readers comparing credit-based options with HeyGen's recurring video quotas.

Wavel AI has a seven-day trial with 15 credits and watermarked videos, suitable for a limited trial rather than HeyGen's recurring three-video free plan.

Rask AI offers a three-minute free trial and voice cloning in 32 languages; consider it when that trial scope fits better than HeyGen's avatar and broader generation workflow.

Dubverse is a paid option with a Pro plan at $18 per month, billed every six months, for 50 credits monthly, videos under 60 minutes, and unlimited downloads.

CaptionHub is an alternative for captioning and subtitle editing, with AI transcription and translation and usage-based pricing without a subscription.

Verdict

Choose HeyGen if you need one platform for varied video inputs, editable avatar-led output, and localization across many languages. The strongest reason to look elsewhere is cost or quota: the free cap is tight, and 4K, longer videos, and team controls push users toward higher-priced plans.
