Overview

Hiya Spam Blocker is a caller-identification and call-protection app for Android and iOS. It is best suited to people who want free alerts and basic blocking, with paid tools for more active screening and number lookup. Its protections have meaningful platform, carrier, and regional limits.

The app aims to identify unknown callers and screen or block spam, telemarketing, robocalls, and suspected fraud. Hiya describes real-time detection of known fraud tactics and voice analysis that can alert users to suspected deepfake voices during a call. These features address different risks, but they do not ensure every unwanted call will be caught: new or spoofed spam numbers may go unflagged initially, and withheld numbers cannot be individually identified or blocked.

Hiya was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The company says it does not retain or use user data to train its AI models, and reports regular third-party penetration tests alongside least privilege, defense in depth, and separation of duties security practices.

Key features

Caller ID and alerts: The free version identifies known businesses and spam numbers and provides spam and fraud alerts. That is a useful no-cost first screen, but individual non-business number identification is a Premium feature and is unavailable in Europe.
Blocking: Basic blocking and spoof-protection settings are included free; Premium adds automatic call blocking and spoofed-call protection. Hiya's fraud detection can block dangerous calls or warn about others, but the acknowledged delay in flagging new or spoofed numbers limits how much users should rely on it as a complete filter.
Lookup and caller details: Premium includes reverse phone lookup and enhanced caller ID. These tools make the paid plan more useful when a caller is not already recognized, subject to the European restriction on individual non-business number identification.
Call screening and voicemail: Call Screener is a Premium feature, works in the US and Canada on supported carriers, and on Android requires one active SIM. Hiya lists automated call screening for iOS and visual voicemail for Android, so the experience is not identical across platforms.
Spam updates: Premium users receive more frequent spam updates on iPhone. That is a specific advantage for iOS subscribers; no equivalent update-frequency benefit is described for Android.
Support: The Spam Blocker Help Center covers setup, troubleshooting, subscriptions, features, and account privacy, giving users a route to resolve common account and configuration questions.

Pricing

Hiya uses a freemium model with a free plan and a 7-day trial. The free tier, Basic, is free and includes caller ID, basic call blocking, and spam-number reporting. It is a sensible starting point for people who mainly want alerts and manual controls, but it gives up automatic blocking, reverse lookup, premium caller ID, and Call Screener.

Premium monthly costs 3.99 USD per month, billed $3.99 if billed monthly. Premium annual costs 24.00 USD per year, billed $24 per year. Both paid plans include reverse phone lookup, premium caller ID, spoofed-call protection, call screening, and visual voicemail. The annual option costs less than twelve monthly payments at the stated rates, but commits the subscriber to a year rather than month-to-month billing. Call screening still depends on supported carriers and location, while individual non-business identification remains unavailable in Europe.

Platforms

Hiya Spam Blocker runs on Android and iOS, but feature parity should not be assumed. The maker identifies automated call screening for iOS and visual voicemail for Android; Call Screener requires Premium, is limited to the US and Canada on supported carriers, and needs one active SIM on Android.

Who it's for

Hiya is a reasonable fit for consumers who want caller ID and spam or fraud alerts before paying for more aggressive blocking and lookup. It is less suitable for anyone who needs every unwanted call caught, wants individual non-business callers identified in Europe, or depends on Call Screener outside its supported countries and carriers.

Pros and cons

Pros: A free plan combines caller ID for known businesses and spam numbers with alerts, basic blocking, spoof-protection settings, and spam reporting.
Pros: Premium brings automatic blocking, reverse lookup, enhanced caller ID, and call screening in one upgrade.
Pros: The company says it does not use user data to train its AI models and describes specific security practices, including regular third-party penetration tests.
Cons: New or spoofed spam numbers may not be flagged initially, and withheld numbers cannot be individually identified or blocked.
Cons: Premium tools are constrained by platform and geography; Call Screener has US and Canada and carrier requirements, while individual non-business identification is unavailable in Europe.
Cons: The annual plan requires a longer commitment, and Android and iOS do not offer the same listed features.

Alternatives

Getcontact is worth considering if web access matters alongside Android and iOS, or if its $2.99 per month Premium plan for removing ads and seeing who viewed tags is more relevant than Hiya's paid call-screening and lookup bundle.
Whoscall may suit users who want its free phone-number, URL, and screenshot checks alongside caller ID, call blocking, scam reports, and rewards.
RoboKiller is another freemium Android and iOS option, with a free plan that includes a global blacklist, spam-call notifications, weekly insights, spam reporting, and Spam Patrol.
NumBuster is an alternative for people who want Android, iOS, and web access; its free mobile app is complemented by paid tiers.
YouMail may be a better fit for users who value voicemail capacity and transcription, with 50 cloud messages, 100 voicemail-to-text transcriptions per month, and unlimited known-spammer blocking on its free plan.
RealCall is another freemium Android and iOS option, with a subscription billed free for 7 days, then $4.49 per month.
CallApp offers an unlimited-time free plan with caller ID, spam protection, and call blocking for Android and iOS.
PhoneBlock is the alternative to consider if open-source software and broad platform coverage matter most: it is GPL-3.0 licensed, free to use, and supports Android, iOS, API, self-hosting, and web.

Verdict

Choose Hiya if you want free caller ID and spam or fraud alerts, with a clear path to automatic blocking, lookup, and screening through Premium. Its chief reason to look elsewhere is the uneven reach of those paid features: regional and carrier restrictions, platform differences, and missed new or spoofed numbers make it a less dependable choice for anyone expecting comprehensive call protection.
