In their own words
Holistics
Holistics is a cloud self-service analytics and business intelligence platform built around a programmable semantic layer. Business users can explore curated datasets and build reports with a drag-and-drop interface without SQL, or ask data questions in plain language and receive answers based on governed business definitions. Data teams can define models, metrics, and dashboards in code and version-control them with Git. Supported SQL sources include PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, SQL Server, MySQL, Presto, Athena, ClickHouse, MotherDuck, and Oracle; listed integrations also include dbt, Slack, Google Sheets, DataHub, and webhooks. Reports export as CSV, Excel, or PDF, with scheduled delivery through Email, Slack, Google Sheets, or SFTP. Holistics says it stores metadata and optional query-result cache that expires after a set period, not raw database data. It lists real-time refresh, row-level security, scheduled reports, and embedded analytics, and states GDPR and SOC 2 compliance. Entry costs $960 a month, or 800 USD per month with annual billing, for 100 reports and the first 10 users.
Malloy
Malloy is an open source language for describing data relationships and transformations. Users can define reusable calculations, table relationships and business logic in semantic models, then compile queries into SQL optimized for the connected database. The language supports nested datasets and automatically guards against common errors in sums, averages and counts. Supported databases include DuckDB, MotherDuck, BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Trino and Presto. DuckDB can read Parquet, CSV and JSON files without additional setup. Malloy offers a Visual Studio Code extension for modeling, querying, transformation and visualization, plus a browser notebook through github.dev that requires a GitHub sign-in. Its Python package loads models, compiles queries and runs statements with DuckDB and BigQuery. The CLI can run Malloy files, build persistent tables and automate transformations and pipelines. The project is free and open source, with web, editor extension, API and self-hosted options, among others. DuckDB connections can disable network access; sandboxed mode also limits file access to allowed directories.
