Overview

Patreon gives creators a place to publish work, build a member community, and earn from memberships or digital sales. It is best suited to creators who want those activities under one roof; its 10% platform fee, plus other possible charges, is the central cost to weigh.

Monthly and annual subscriptions can sit alongside free posts, letting a creator build an audience before adding paid access. Patreon also handles payment disputes and most applicable tax collection and remittance, reducing some operational work without removing the need to account for fees.

Key features

Creators can offer membership tiers, one-time payments, and shops, and publish audio, images, rich text, native video, or livestreams. A livestream can run for up to 12 hours continuously. That is ample for typical broadcasts, but not for an uninterrupted event longer than half a day.

Community features include chats, direct messages, comments, newsletters, and exportable email lists. Creators can make up to 10 chat spaces and choose whether each is open to all members, paid members, or selected tiers. This gives some control over member access, though the chat-space cap may constrain communities that need more distinct rooms.

Podcast tools support importing and syncing shows, multiple podcasts, Spotify, Synced Feeds, and RSS. Analytics, discovery, free trials, discounts, and sales add ways to understand and grow an audience. Integrations include Vimeo, Discord, ConvertKit, Discourse, Wix, and Zapier. Patreon’s public API v1 is scheduled to stop working on October 7, 2026, with integrations directed to API v2, a transition developers should account for.

Patreon says it uses TLS for sensitive information, HTTPS for traffic, two-factor authentication, and CAPTCHA checks for suspicious activity. It also offers a bug bounty programme and accepts security reports. Its payment systems handle chargebacks, disputes, and fraud; most applicable tax collection and remittance are managed by Patreon. Payout and pay-in support covers 16 or more currencies, with PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, and Sofort among supported payment methods.

Pricing

Patreon is free to start: the free plan is free, and creators pay when they begin earning. The Standard Patreon pricing is also free, with a 10% fee on income earned through Patreon, plus payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes. The Standard plan includes up to 100 hours per month of video hosting if the creator has paying fans. Monthly and annual subscriptions, membership tiers, one-time payments, and free-to-start publishing are part of the offer.

The 10% fee makes the no-upfront-cost model accessible to creators testing paid support, but it takes a continuing share as earnings rise, before additional charges. Patreon also presents a Patreon platform fee of 10.00 USD per month, described as 10% of income earned on Patreon plus applicable fees and taxes. Creators should distinguish that percentage-based charge from the free-to-start price rather than treat the latter as a promise that earning is cost-free. No free-tier limits are stated, so there is no stated cap to compare against a paid entry plan.

Platforms

Patreon runs on the web and has iOS and Android apps; an API is also available. The mobile apps suit creators and members who need access away from a desktop, while API-dependent integrations should move toward v2 ahead of the scheduled v1 shutdown. Creators can use a custom domain.

Who it's for

Patreon is a natural fit for podcasters, video creators, musicians, artists, and game developers who want to mix open publishing with paid memberships, one-off support, or digital sales. It is less compelling for creators whose priority is minimizing the share paid to a platform, or whose community needs more than 10 separate chat spaces.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free publishing can precede paid offerings, so creators can begin building an audience without an upfront subscription charge.
Pro: Memberships, one-time payments, shops, varied publishing formats, and community tools cover several creator needs in one service.
Pro: Patreon handles disputes and most applicable tax collection and remittance, easing payment administration.
Con: The 10% platform fee is joined by processing, conversion, payout, and tax charges, so the headline free entry does not mean earnings are fee-free.
Con: Livestreams stop at 12 continuous hours, and creators can have no more than 10 chat spaces.
Con: API v1’s scheduled end makes the move to v2 relevant for integrations that depend on the older version.

Alternatives

For a dedicated membership-site builder, compare membership site platforms; for earning from podcast audiences, compare podcast monetization platforms.

Appy Pie Membership Website Builder is worth considering for a web-based membership site with a free plan, free trial, and paid option from 18.00 USD per month. Raklet is a better fit when contact and email quotas are central: its free plan includes 100 contacts, one admin seat, and 1,250 free emails per month, while Essentials costs 59.00 USD per month.

Paid Memberships Pro suits those who want an open-source core plugin and add-ons that can run on as many sites as desired. Ghost is an option for a paid web publishing service: its Starter plan costs 18.00 USD per month billed yearly and targets solo blogs and newsletters, with 1,000 members, one staff user, and a 5 MB file upload limit.

Uscreen is an alternative for video-focused businesses that prefer a paid plan with defined allowances: Starter costs 49.00 USD per month and includes 100 subscribers and 20 hours of video storage. Systeme.io offers a free web plan with 2,000 contacts, three sales funnels, one course, one blog, and one custom domain.

WildApricot may suit organizations seeking membership and contact-database software, with its 100 Contacts plan at 66.00 USD per month. Brilliant Directories is another paid web option, with an Essentials plan at 40.00 USD per month and a seven-day free trial.

Verdict

Choose Patreon if you want to combine free publishing, paid memberships, creator sales, and community features, while outsourcing some payment and tax administration. Its no-upfront-cost start is attractive, but the 10% platform fee and additional possible charges make it a weaker choice when keeping more of each sale is the priority.
