In their own words
IAR Embedded Workbench
IAR Embedded Workbench is an embedded development toolchain with an IDE, optimizing compiler, linker, assembler, and debugger. It supports over 20 architectures, including Arm, RISC-V, 8051, MSP430, AVR, and several Renesas families. The C-SPY debugger provides real-time trace, code coverage, function profiling, and RTOS awareness. IAR C-STAT offers static analysis; IAR C-RUN detects runtime errors and is available for Arm and RX. The toolchain works with VS Code and Eclipse, supports CMake builds, and can integrate with CI/CD pipelines. Supported debug probes include I-jet, I-jet Trace, J-Link, PE Micro, and ST-LINK. Built-in plugins provide RTOS awareness for systems including PX5 RTOS and Zephyr RTOS. The IDE runs natively on Linux and Windows. A 14-day evaluation is available for non-commercial use, but excludes runtime library source code, C-STAT, and MISRA C support and includes limited technical support. Paid subscription pricing is available by request; the subscription combines named-user licenses and build capacity for automated builds and CI/CD.
NuEclipse
NuEclipse is Nuvoton’s free development environment for creating, building, and debugging NuMicro projects on Windows and Linux. The NuMicro 8051 edition targets NuMicro 8-bit devices, while the ARM edition supports NuMicro Cortex-M projects and NuMicro Cortex-A bare-metal projects. Nuvoton lists SDCC for the 8-bit variant and GCC for Cortex-M. Both variants use the Nu-Link debugger, with integrated debugging and flashing. The listed ARM downloads for Windows and Linux are version V1.02.029, dated 2025-03-06. Nuvoton also lists a NuMicro Cortex-M Pack for Visual Studio Code, supporting project building, programming, and debugging on Windows and Linux. Both NuEclipse plans cost nothing. The maker links to technical support, a technical community, a learning center, FAQs, and technical blogs. Nuvoton was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Its stated focus includes microcontroller and audio, cloud security, battery monitoring, component, and visual sensing ICs. Security guidance asks for encrypted vulnerability reports and allows seven business days for an initial response.
