Overview

Exchange brings threat reports, indicator context and collaborative research into a web portal. Reports cover IP addresses, URLs, malware hashes, web applications, signatures and vulnerabilities, helping analysts add context to an investigation. Logged-in users can search, comment, create collections and share findings; guests cannot use every site feature.

Collections can combine IP or URL data with reports, comments and other research, and can be public or private. That is useful for preserving findings or sharing them with peers, though it should not be mistaken for a complete operational case-management product simply because case management appears among the platform's capabilities.

Key features

QRadar investigation

The QRadar plug-in searches Exchange for IP addresses, URLs, CVEs and web applications found in QRadar. Analysts can look up IP and URL data from events and send information from searches, offenses and rules into collections. This makes Exchange a strong fit for teams already investigating in QRadar; teams using other SIEMs should not expect the same plug-in workflow.

Feeds and API

The API documentation describes IP and URL category feeds, reports, vulnerability feeds and TAXII feeds. Its subscription tiers span indicator enrichment through curated protection feeds and insights on threat groups, campaigns, industries and malware. JSON and STIX/TAXII support provide formats for integrating intelligence into other tools. The Advanced Threat Protection Feed supplies machine-readable indicators for firewalls, intrusion prevention systems and SIEMs using open standards.

That integration potential comes with a firm access boundary: Freemium API keys no longer access the X-Force API, and using the API requires a purchased premium subscription through IBM. The API accepts HTTPS with TLS 1.2 or newer and rejects older connections. Keys and passwords are tied to a user's ID, do not expire, and the password is shown only when generated, so credential handling matters.

Pricing

Exchange uses a freemium model. Freemium: free provides limited access to the portal, with indicator enrichment, STIX/TAXII support, report management, workflow automation and case management shown as capabilities; it includes no X-Force API access. The portal can serve users who need occasional research and collections, but it is not a free route to automated feed consumption.

API access requires a paid premium subscription purchased through IBM; the API tiers are Essentials, Standard and Premium, with capabilities varying by tier, and pricing is custom. Commercial API and ATP feed customers can open IBM Support tickets; other inquiries can be emailed to xfe@us.ibm.com.

IBM also offers a 30-day trial of either dedicated Premium Threat Intelligence feed product. That trial applies to the feed products, not to free API access. Readers who need machine-readable integration should budget for a commercial subscription rather than assume the free plan or trial removes the API purchase requirement.

Platforms

The service is platform independent. The GUI runs on a workstation or mobile device with a supported browser and direct internet connection; the documented commercial API requires a compatible third-party application. Exchange supports web and API access and is deployed in the cloud.

Who it's for

Exchange suits analysts who want indicator context, shared collections and a direct QRadar lookup path, as well as security teams prepared to buy API access for feed integration. IBM identifies its API Enterprise license as suitable for security operations centers and managed security service providers. It is a weaker fit for teams seeking unrestricted free API use, or those who need a documented QRadar-like integration with another SIEM.

Pros and cons

Useful QRadar workflow: lookups and collection submissions connect indicator research to events, searches, offenses and rules.
Broad intelligence formats: JSON and STIX/TAXII, plus machine-readable ATP indicators, support integration with security tooling.
Flexible shared research: public or private collections can hold indicators, reports and comments.
Free access stops short of automation: the portal is limited and Freemium API keys cannot access the X-Force API.
Commercial access adds procurement friction: API use requires a purchased premium subscription through IBM.
Credentials need care: the API password is visible only when generated, so users need to retain it securely.

Alternatives

For a wider set of threat intelligence options, browse Threat Intelligence Platforms. OpenAEV is another freemium option with a free on-premise community edition focused on attack simulation and tabletop exercises, rather than X-Force Exchange's threat research and feeds. ThreatForge offers an open-source community edition and a 90-day enterprise trial for teams weighing self-hosted threat intelligence.

Security Vision TIP is a paid alternative with pricing calculated individually through sales. SOCRadar Extended Threat Intelligence Platform is worth considering for teams that want a freemium service with paid dark-web monitoring plans, including a 1-domain, 1-seat Essential plan at 600.00 USD per month. Group-IB Attack Surface Management is a paid option with trial access and pricing based on confirmed external assets.

Kaspersky Threat Intelligence Portal has a free tier for curated features, with limits on features and suspicious files and URLs for Cloud Sandbox. Flashpoint Ignite uses pricing by request. ThreatQ may suit teams seeking a licensed platform that runs on Linux or self-hosted environments; its platform license is not perpetual, and additional modules require license updates.

Verdict

Choose IBM X-Force Exchange if QRadar lookups, collaborative collections or IBM's commercial threat feeds fit your security workflow. Its combination of indicator context and integration formats is useful, but the free portal is a research entry point, not an automation tier. Look elsewhere if you need free API access or a workflow tailored to a different SIEM.
