Overview

Founded in 1997, iClicker brings live questions, reactions, attendance and feedback together with an instructor gradebook that reports on performance and participation in real time. Students can respond by mobile app, student web app or physical iClicker remote. That flexibility suits classes where phone-only participation is a poor fit, while the course-based subscription requirement means students should confirm what their course requires before choosing a plan.

Instructors get a free account, and institutions can arrange enterprise access. iClicker is part of the Macmillan Learning family.

Key features

Instructors can ask multiple-choice, multiple-answer, short-answer, numeric, target, formula or symbol questions, as well as anonymous questions. That range supports more than quick knowledge checks: instructors can gather feedback and invite responses without attribution. Live polling, quiz mode and slide integrations connect those activities to classroom teaching.

The AI Question Creator can generate up to 50 questions and use uploaded files as context, a useful starting point for instructors building question sets around course material. It does not replace the need to review questions before using them. Attendance covers in-person and virtual classes; Pulse adds auto-run sessions and late-arrival tracking. The gradebook provides real-time reporting on student and class performance, attendance and participation.

Integrations include Blackboard, Canvas, Brightspace by D2L and Moodle, with roster and grade sync, CSV integration and single sign-on. These connections make iClicker a stronger fit for courses that need participation and attendance data alongside LMS records. The institutional offering cites AWS hosting, firewall protection, segregated Virtual Private Cloud architecture and third-party penetration testing, as well as FERPA and FIPPA compliance and 1EdTech Data Privacy Certification. Its mobile and web platforms were independently audited against WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Pricing

Pricing is freemium, but a student's enrolled course determines whether a subscription is required. Prices below are for U.S. customers; international and partner pricing requires contacting iClicker.

Instructor account: 0.00 USD per free, always free for instructors. It provides instructor access, making it the clear starting point for faculty.
iClicker Pulse — 6 months: 4.99 USD per month. Includes attendance tracking, auto-run class sessions and late-arrival tracking. This is the lower-cost fit for students whose course needs attendance features rather than the broader Pro toolset.
iClicker Pulse — 12 months: 7.99 USD per month, billed annually. It includes the same attendance features as the six-month Pulse plan, but the annual billing term matters for students who may not need year-round access.
iClicker Pro — 6 months: 15.99 USD per month. Adds LMS grade and attendance sync, live polling and quizzing, assignments, study tools, focus reports, group learning and emoji reactions. It suits students whose course uses the fuller participation and study feature set, but is a substantial step up from Pulse.
iClicker Pro — 12 months: 24.99 USD per month, billed annually. It includes the same Pro features; students should weigh the broader access against the annual billing commitment.
Institutional enterprise plans: custom pricing for departmental and institutional access; contact iClicker for details.

Platforms

iClicker lists Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Students can use Apple or Android smartphones, the student web app or physical remotes. Instructor desktop software is available for Windows and Mac, with minimum requirements of Windows 10 or newer and macOS 12 or newer.

Who it's for

iClicker is a good fit for instructors who want a single workflow for classroom questions, attendance and reporting, particularly when LMS grade and roster sync matters. It also suits courses that benefit from multiple participation methods or anonymous questions. It is less compelling for students seeking a standalone polling tool with a predictable personal cost: course requirements determine whether payment is needed, and Pro plans cost more than Pulse.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple question formats, including anonymous responses, give instructors more ways to check understanding and collect feedback than multiple-choice polling alone.
Pro: App, web and physical remote participation accommodates students who cannot or prefer not to use a smartphone.
Pro: LMS integrations, roster and grade sync, and real-time gradebook reporting connect classroom activity with course administration.
Pro: Pulse combines attendance tracking with auto-run sessions and late-arrival tracking.
Con: Students cannot determine their required subscription from the plan lineup alone; the enrolled course sets whether a subscription is needed.
Con: Pro costs notably more than Pulse, so students who need only attendance features may pay for a wider package than they need if they choose Pro.

Alternatives

Poll Everywhere is worth considering for a free option with a stated 40-person audience limit, or 700 for 30 days, and 10 AI prompts per month. Kahoot! offers a free plan for up to 40 participants with quiz and true-or-false questions, a better fit when that classic live quiz format is the priority. Particify gives its free plan 200 participants per room, unlimited rooms and question series, and one room creator, suiting organizers who need multiple question series without a room cap.

Votinova is another freemium option. AhaSlides offers a free plan for up to 50 participants, with five quiz questions and three poll questions per presentation, which may suit smaller sessions with modest question needs. EngageSlide allows up to 10 live participants on its free plan and includes all slide types, a fit for small live groups. StreamAlive has a free plan for up to five participants per session and unlimited sessions. PollQR limits its free plan to one live poll; its pay-as-you-go option costs 2.99 USD per month and includes 500 responses per poll, a potential fit for occasional polling.

Verdict

Choose iClicker if you teach a course that benefits from varied response formats, flexible student access, attendance tracking and LMS-connected reporting. Its strongest case is the combination of classroom interaction and course administration, backed by a free instructor account. Students should look elsewhere if they need a predictable independent purchase or want to avoid Pro's higher price; first confirm which subscription, if any, their course requires.
