Overview

Built on the Orton-Gillingham approach, Reading Mountain uses multisensory lessons to connect phonics practice with reading and writing. The program currently covers Levels 1 to 3; Levels 4 and 5 are in development, and Levels 6 to 16 are planned by the end of 2026. There is no placement assessment yet, and the recommended starting point is Level 1, Lesson 1. That is a straightforward entry for beginners, but may mean unnecessary early lessons for readers whose skills are already more advanced.

The recommended pace is about two hours per week, divided into short sessions such as four 30-minute sessions. That gives families and instructors a manageable routine to follow.

Key features

Lessons include reading tiles, spelling tiles, words, sentences, writing, games, and decodable books. Students read at least one decodable book per lesson, with AI support and comprehension questions. The combination gives learners practice across several early-literacy skills rather than restricting work to isolated phonics drills.

Speech detection flags sounds and words a learner may struggle with, while AI generates reading-pattern insights and scores reading accuracy in books. A parent and instructor portal provides progress reports and printable customized worksheets after lessons. Together, these features give adults material for tracking progress and follow-up practice; they do not solve the separate issue of choosing an appropriate starting level.

The free Basecamp app focuses on phonemic awareness, with activities for segmenting, isolating, blending, and swapping sounds. It requires no login, but is a separate app rather than a free tier of the full lesson program. It is useful as a no-cost way to practice foundational sound skills, not as a substitute for the paid, multi-level curriculum.

Pricing

Basecamp is free and provides the separate phonemic-awareness app without a login. It suits learners who need sound-segmenting and blending activities, but does not include the full Reading Mountain lessons, progress reports, or the all-level curriculum.

Individual costs 29.00 USD per month for one student and includes all levels and lessons. It is the straightforward choice for a single learner who needs the complete program. Family costs 49.00 USD per month for up to four students, also with all levels and lessons; it is the better fit when several learners in one household can use the same subscription. The family plan costs more overall but lowers the per-student price when more than one seat is used.

Platforms

Reading Mountain runs on Apple and Android phones and tablets, as well as laptops and computers through a browser. That range accommodates mobile practice and computer-based sessions without limiting access to one device type.

Who it's for

The program is aimed at early and struggling readers and people with dyslexia, from children to adults. It is a particularly sensible option for a parent or instructor who wants structured phonics and decodable reading alongside reports and worksheets for follow-up. Learners who need a higher-level starting point should consider whether Level 1 is an acceptable entry, since there is no placement assessment and only the first three levels are currently available.

Its privacy policy says student names and instructor name and email are collected for educational purposes, and that user data is not sold. The app states that it complies with COPPA and gives parents or guardians rights to access, delete, or stop collection of a child's data. Trusted service providers such as Google Firebase may host data to operate the app.

Pros and cons

Broad lesson practice: Reading, spelling, writing, games, and at least one decodable book per lesson combine several forms of early-literacy work.
Useful adult support: Progress reports and customized printable worksheets help parents and instructors carry practice beyond the lesson.
Accessible sound practice: The no-login Basecamp app offers phonemic-awareness activities at no cost, though it is separate from the full curriculum.
Limited current scope: Only Levels 1 to 3 are available, and there is no assessment to direct learners to the right starting point.
Family pricing requires multiple seats: The $49 monthly plan only improves on the $29 single-student plan when more than one learner needs access.

Alternatives

Lexy may suit families seeking a free starting point for up to five students with AI tutoring, voice-based learning, and adaptive phonics; its free plan runs on iOS, macOS, and web.

Verdict

Reading Mountain is a strong choice for families and instructors who want a structured, multisensory phonics program that pairs decodable reading with practical progress support. The main reason to look elsewhere is its limited current level range and lack of placement assessment: learners who need to start above Level 1 may find a better match in a program that can meet them at their current level.
