Overview

ImageFocus Alpha is free microscope capture and analysis software for people working with compatible Euromex cameras. It is best suited to university, laboratory, and industry users who need to capture and examine microscope images within that equipment setup. Its broad microscopy toolkit costs nothing, but compatibility—not price—is the deciding factor.

Key features

Alpha supports measurements and annotations on both live and captured images, so users can assess a specimen during observation or add measurements to an existing image. Its analysis tools include segmentation and counting, image stitching, and extended depth of focus; fluorescence functions can combine captured fluorescence images. This range makes Alpha a stronger fit for microscopy work that involves analysis as well as documentation than a capture-only utility.

Still images can be saved in JPEG, TIFF, BMP, or DICOM, with video saved in AVI. That variety supports different documentation needs, including DICOM workflows, while AVI covers video output. The full package includes DirectShow, Twain, and µManager drivers, and Euromex provides free software updates and customer assistance.

The compatible-equipment list spans Euromex USB-3 Pro and scientific cameras, cooled and Wi-Fi cameras, HD-Pro and other VC cameras, a digital bScope, and DC.2000L. Alpha is not a sensible choice unless your camera setup is among the compatible models.

Pricing

ImageFocus Alpha is free: the ImageFocus Alpha plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because the software itself is free. For owners of compatible Euromex cameras, that means access to the described capture and analysis functions without a software charge; the plan is designed for those camera models rather than a general-purpose audience.

There are no cheaper tiers to compare or software fees to weigh against a paid plan. The practical limit is equipment compatibility: a zero-cost license offers little value if your camera is not supported.

Platforms

Downloads are provided for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux, with Android and iOS apps for Wi-Fi-enabled devices. The iOS app is available only through the App Store. Desktop users have the broadest choice of installation platforms; mobile use depends on both a Wi-Fi-enabled device and the relevant app.

Who it's for

Alpha fits universities, laboratories, and industrial users who already work with compatible Euromex camera solutions and want measurement, image analysis, and capture in one free package. It is a poor fit for users seeking microscope software independent of that camera ecosystem, or for anyone whose equipment is not compatible.

Pros and cons

Pro: Measurement, annotation, segmentation, counting, stitching, extended depth of focus, and fluorescence-image combination cover several microscopy tasks in one free package.
Pro: Live-image measurements and annotations allow work during observation as well as on saved images.
Pro: Still-image and video output includes several formats, including DICOM and AVI.
Con: The software is designed for compatible Euromex camera models, making equipment fit a prerequisite rather than a minor consideration.
Con: The iOS app is limited to App Store distribution, and mobile apps are intended for Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

Alternatives

For a broader focus-stacking comparison, browse Focus Stacking Software.

PlaneFuse is a free, MIT-licensed option for personal and commercial use, with no tiers and support for API, web, self-hosted, Linux, macOS, and Windows setups; choose it when those deployment options or the absence of tiers matter more than Alpha's microscopy-camera focus.

OpenFocus is free and open source under MIT, with a GUI for Windows and macOS and a CLI also available on Linux; it suits readers who prefer that GUI-and-command-line split.

ForgePix is free MIT-licensed software for Linux, macOS, and Windows; consider it when you want a free desktop option outside Alpha's specified camera ecosystem.

Helicon Focus is a paid option for macOS and Windows with a free trial; it is an alternative for readers willing to consider paid software.

PhotoAcute Studio is a paid option for Linux, macOS, and Windows with a free trial; its developer is Almalence.

Shine Stacker is free, open source under LGPL-3.0, and offers Windows, Mac OS, and Linux downloads; choose it if open-source desktop software is the priority.

Zerene Stacker offers a 39.00 USD one-time Student Edition for eligible students, with personal technical features and license terms that apply while the user is a student; it may suit an eligible student seeking a one-time-cost option.

Aduku Stacker is a free option for macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose ImageFocus Alpha if you use a compatible Euromex camera and want free capture, measurement, and image-analysis tools in a single microscopy package. Its breadth and lack of a software fee are compelling for that setup. Look elsewhere if your equipment is outside its compatibility list or you need software that is not tied to Euromex cameras.
