In their own words
imgproxy
imgproxy is a self-hosted HTTP server that transforms images on demand using a source URL and processing options. It can resize, crop, trim, rotate, pad, watermark, apply filters and color adjustments, and chain processing steps. Sources include HTTP(S), local files, Amazon S3-compatible storage, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, and OpenStack Swift. Supported formats include JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, GIF, SVG, ICO, HEIC, BMP, TIFF, and animated GIF and WebP. Optimization can remove metadata and ICC profiles, quantize PNGs, and serve WebP, AVIF, or JPEG XL when a browser supports the format. imgproxy can run in Docker, Kubernetes with Helm, cloud environments, or on a local machine. Security options include signed URLs, authorization headers, source and file-size limits, dimension checks, URL expiration, and SVG sanitization. Pro adds video, PDF, and Photoshop previews, advanced compression and watermarking, object detection and cropping, automatic format selection, and priority support. The open-source version uses the MIT license. A free plan and 14-day trial are listed; Pro starts at $49 a month.
Thumbor
Thumbor is a self-hosted image service for on-demand cropping, resizing and flipping. Its smart mode looks for faces when choosing a crop and falls back to feature detection if it finds none. Filters can be chained, including brightness, contrast, grayscale, red-eye and blur. Thumbor supports WebP delivery to browsers that can display the format, and its listed capabilities include responsive images, automatic optimization and AVIF support. File, HTTP, Redis and Mongo implementations are available for loaders and storage. The service can be extended with custom filters, storage, loaders, engines, detection and optimizers. A SECURITY_KEY can be used to sign image URLs with HMAC to help guard against tampering. The default HTTP loader uses HTTP; the documentation also describes HTTPS and strict HTTPS options. Thumbor is distributed as a Python package, and current releases require Python 3.10 or newer. The project describes it as open source and lists an MIT license. Its platforms include API, Linux and self-hosted use. The listed plan costs nothing.
