Overview

InterActive Legal organizes its drafting systems around different planning needs: modest wealth, significant wealth, elder law and special needs, and firearms trusts. Across its Essentials, Wealth Transfer, and Elder Law systems, the product comparison covers wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care documents, trust administration forms, agreements, and client communications. That breadth suits practices handling multiple kinds of planning work, though firms should select systems based on the matters they actually serve.

Firearms Trust Planning is a focused offering for clients who own firearms, built around a single-grantor revocable NFA Trust and related ancillary documents. It addresses a specialized need rather than replacing a broader estate-planning system.

Key features

Systems for distinct client groups

Essential Estate Planning is designed for clients of modest wealth, while Wealth Transfer Planning targets clients with significant wealth. Elder Law Planning provides documents for elder law and special-needs planning. This separation helps a practice choose a system aligned with its clientele, but practices serving all of these groups may need to assess more than one system.

Browser drafting and Word documents

The online system runs in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Chromium Edge, Brave, and Opera, across Windows, Mac, iOS, and Linux environments; it has also been tested on Android tablets. That makes it the more flexible route for practices working across devices. It produces .docx documents, but the word-processing toolbar is supported only on Word for Windows, a meaningful constraint for Mac- or browser-first workflows.

Security, support, and retention

For the online version, customer data is stored encrypted on AWS servers, and browser-to-ILS traffic uses TLS 1.3 and SHA-256 encryption. Users can opt in to multi-factor authentication through a third-party authenticator app. Data is deleted 90 days after a subscription expires without renewal unless the user deletes it later, so firms should account for that window in their records practices. InterActive Legal describes personalized online training and provides a support contact for subscribers.

Pricing

InterActive Legal is paid software with custom pricing. Essential Estate Planning, Wealth Transfer Planning, Elder Law Planning, and Firearms Trust Planning each have custom pricing, so firms must weigh the system against their practice needs without a published plan price to compare.

Essential Estate Planning fits practices serving clients of modest wealth; Wealth Transfer Planning is aimed at significant-wealth planning; Elder Law Planning covers elder law and special needs; and Firearms Trust Planning is for firearm-owning clients. The choice is therefore principally about the drafting scope a firm needs, rather than a published low-cost or free tier.

Platforms

The online system supports major browsers and Windows, Mac, iOS, and Linux environments, with Android tablet testing. Its document output is .docx, but the toolbar requires Word for Windows. The separate Legacy installation requires a supported Windows version, Microsoft Word, and HotDocs Player, making it a substantially narrower option for firms with mixed or non-Windows setups.

Who it's for

InterActive Legal is a strong candidate for legal practices drafting estate-planning documents for clients with varied levels of wealth, elder-law or special-needs needs, or firearm trusts. Its distinct systems can match specialized client work, and browser access accommodates multiple operating environments. It is less suitable for an individual seeking an inexpensive self-service plan or for a practice that needs a consistent Word toolbar across Mac and Windows.

Pros and cons

Broad planning document coverage: the systems span core estate-planning documents, administration forms, agreements, and client communications.
Client-specific systems: separate options address modest wealth, significant wealth, elder law and special needs, and a defined firearms-trust use case.
Flexible online access: multiple browsers and operating environments are supported, including tested Android tablets.
Word workflow limitation: the toolbar is supported only on Word for Windows, despite the broader browser and device reach.
Legacy setup requirements: the installation depends on Windows, Microsoft Word, and HotDocs Player.
Custom pricing: firms cannot compare the systems using published plan prices.

Alternatives

For a simpler consumer estate-planning route, Trust & Will offers a free Basic membership for estate-plan creation and an Essentials membership at 49.00 USD per year. Everplans is a better fit for organizing end-of-life information: its free plan stores up to three items, while Premium costs 99.99 USD per year for unlimited items. Neither is positioned around the same professional drafting-system scope described by InterActive Legal.

Practices seeking another paid drafting system can compare WealthCounsel, whose Trusts & Estates Professional plan includes Wealth Docx Complete, Business Docx, Wealth Tracx, and Gun Docx, with membership pricing dependent on firm user count and selection. For a free web-based option, FreeWill provides estate-planning tools at no charge, including a will, a California revocable living trust, an advance healthcare directive, and a financial power of attorney.

Rocket Lawyer Estate Planning is another paid alternative, with a Standard plan at 149.00 USD per year. Gathered Here offers a free online will with free updates, while its probate service is a fixed-fee service at 1698.00 USD per contact. Quicken WillMaker & Trust may suit buyers who prefer one-time pricing: its Starter Plan is 109.00 USD per once and its Plus Plan is 149.00 USD per once. Safewill offers a Will updates subscription at 15.00 USD per year, which auto-renews annually unless opted out.

Verdict

InterActive Legal is best for legal practices that need professional drafting systems across estate planning, significant-wealth transfer, elder law, or firearms trusts. Its strongest reason to choose it is the breadth and segmentation of its planning documents, paired with broad online access. Look elsewhere if published, low-cost pricing or a Word toolbar that works beyond Windows is essential.
