Overview

Lecturers upload rubrics in DOCX, PDF or plain text and add submissions individually or as a class. UniRubric drafts grades against the rubric with quoted evidence, but a lecturer must review, edit and approve each grade before it reaches a student. That makes it a fit for assisted marking, not hands-off automated grading.

It supports analytic and holistic rubrics, AI assistance and bulk scoring. For faculty leads, a dashboard shows rubric calibration across markers and can draft a meeting agenda and schedule a calibration meeting. Those tools extend the product beyond grading individual submissions, though institutional plans add teacher-account costs to student-based fees.

Key features

Evidence-backed drafts: Quoted evidence gives lecturers material to check against rubric criteria. Mandatory approval preserves staff control, but also means the workflow still depends on lecturer review.
Class-level workflow: Submissions can be added one at a time or as a class, with bulk scoring available. This suits marking that needs to scale across a class while keeping grades in draft form.
LMS connections: Institutional plans support Canvas, Moodle and Blackboard through LTI 1.3; Assignment & Grade Services are in active rollout. The contracting page also names Brightspace integration for institutional plans.
Data handling: Data is region-pinned to Sydney, with no cross-region replication under standard operating conditions. UniRubric says data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256, with per-tenant column encryption for sensitive student identifiers. Submissions, rubrics, grades, edits and feedback are not used to train or fine-tune models.
Retention and access: Deleted assignments are hard-deleted from production within 24 hours and removed from backups within 35 days; grading-run audit logs are kept for seven years. Staff access customer data only through institution-opened support tickets, with access logged and limited to the data the institution directs them to.

The security page describes the product as aligned with the AU Privacy Act, GDPR, FERPA and TEQSA. SOC 2 Type I is a Q4 2026 roadmap target, not a current certification.

Pricing

UniRubric is freemium, with a free plan and a free trial. The paid-from figure is $15/mo, but the plans use different billing units and allowances, so the headline rate does not describe every buyer's likely cost.

Lecturer Free: 0.00 USD per free for one lifetime marking job, with full rubric-anchored output, approval before release and PDF export. No credit card is required. It is useful for a single evaluation, but not ongoing marking.
Top-up packs: 1.00 USD per extra run, sold in small packs beyond the free lecturer job or Premium allowance. No charge is made without sign-off. This provides a way to handle occasional overages, rather than a larger base allowance.
Lecturer Premium · monthly: 15.00 USD per month for 15 runs per calendar month, six-month rollover, priority queue and $1 per extra run via top-up packs. It can be cancelled any time. This is the straightforward recurring option for lecturers with regular but bounded marking needs.
Lecturer Premium · annual: 180.00 USD per year, paid up front, for 15 runs per month, six-month rollover and $1 per extra run via top-up packs. Renewal can be cancelled any time. It suits lecturers comfortable paying annually for the same monthly allowance.
Institutional Light: 9.00 USD per year per student per term, with 10 runs per student per term. Teacher account services cost $18/month/account, and local tax is added to the formal quote. Its lower run allowance is best for lighter marking volumes.
Institutional Standard: 15.00 USD per year per student per term, with 25 runs per student per term, plus teacher account services at $18/month/account and local tax on the formal quote. This raises the allowance over Light while preserving the same per-account charge.
Institutional Heavy: 25.00 USD per year per student per term, with 60 runs per student per term, plus teacher account services at $18/month/account and local tax on the formal quote. It is the institutional tier for heavier marking, but charges scale with students and terms as well as teacher accounts.

Institutional annual marking charges scale by the number of students and terms per year. Buyers should compare the run allowance with expected volume and include teacher accounts and local tax when budgeting.

Platforms

UniRubric runs on the web and offers an API. Institutional LMS integration supports Canvas, Moodle and Blackboard through LTI 1.3, with Assignment & Grade Services in active rollout; Brightspace is also named for institutional plans.

Who it's for

UniRubric is aimed at lecturers who want rubric-anchored grading drafts with evidence, and at universities seeking a shared marking workflow with faculty calibration tools and LMS connections. Its approval requirement suits institutions that want staff to retain final grading responsibility. Lecturers with only occasional needs can try the lifetime free job; teams should match their anticipated run volume to the institutional caps and per-account costs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Every grade requires lecturer review, editing and approval before release, so AI does not make the final grading decision.
Pro: Quoted evidence accompanies rubric-anchored drafts, making the output reviewable against criteria.
Pro: Faculty calibration tools support alignment across markers, beyond the individual marking workflow.
Con: Lecturer Free covers one lifetime marking job, which is a narrow allowance for recurring work.
Con: Premium includes 15 runs per month before top-ups; institutional tiers cap runs per student per term and add $18/month/account for teacher services.
Con: SOC 2 Type I remains a roadmap target for Q4 2026, which may matter to institutions requiring that certification now.

Alternatives

If you want question-by-question grading, dynamic rubrics and assignment statistics on a free plan, consider Gradescope, which also offers regrade requests and data export in its Basic plan. For an Android or iOS app limited to three rubrics for one class on its free tier, Rubric Scorer is another option. If web access and a free allowance of 10 learner submissions per month, limited rubric uploads and 30-day retention suit your needs, GradeBoard offers those caps alongside DOCX annotated downloads and basic analytics.

OpenRubric is an alternative with web and self-hosted options. Crowdmark is an alternative with course-based or annual subscriptions. For instructors evaluating a free self-hosted web option, Pawtograder offers a community instance, with ongoing use at scale requiring contact with its maker. If free unlimited faculty and staff accounts and student access billed at $5 per month fit your model, consider RubriqFlow. For an individual educator seeking macOS or Windows software on a $120.00 USD per year plan, AI Grader Pro is another choice.

For a broader comparison, see Rubric Software.

Verdict

UniRubric is a strong choice for lecturers and institutions that want evidence-backed, rubric-based AI drafts without surrendering approval of grades. Its faculty calibration tools and institutional LMS connections add value for coordinated marking. Look elsewhere if your marking volume outgrows its run allowances or if institutional per-student, per-term charges and teacher-account fees do not fit your budget.
