| AI privacy | AI features can use local or online providers; online providers require an API key, and declining the privacy notice prevents external transmission. | The site says hosted AI sends the text needed for a request to the provider whose key the user supplied; local models send nothing to a provider. |
| What it does | JabRef is a cross-platform desktop manager for BibTeX and BibLaTeX references. | Sciwand combines reference management, academic search, document analysis, citation writing and PDF reading in one desktop application. |

In their own words
JabRef
JabRef is a free, open-source citation and reference manager for collecting and organizing research sources. It works natively with BibTeX and BibLaTeX libraries stored as text, imports references from more than 15 formats, and extracts metadata from PDFs. Users can search scientific catalogs such as CrossRef, Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer, arXiv, and zbMATH. Library tools include hierarchical collections, keywords and tags, advanced search and filters, duplicate merging, and customizable citation keys. JabRef supports cite-as-you-write workflows with Word and LibreOffice/OpenOffice, and can send citation keys to editors including Emacs, LyX, TeXstudio, Vim, and WinEdt. Its browser extension collects bibliographic information from websites, though the documentation warns it is non-functional on Chrome. Teams can share a SQL database, and SSL connections are supported; SSL testing is documented only for PostgreSQL. Since version 6, users can summarize papers and chat with them through external AI providers, which process requests and linked PDFs. The project directs users to documentation and a community forum for help, with bug reports handled through GitHub.
Sciwand
Sciwand is a desktop research app that combines reference management, document reading, research analysis, and academic writing. Its AI columns can score papers, screen them as yes or no, extract findings, and build structured datasets across documents. Library chat answers cite source sentences and let users jump to the relevant page in a paper. Sciwand can search academic databases and apply AI screening to search results. Its Markdown writer supports more than 10,000 citation styles; a Microsoft Word add-in for Windows and macOS is described as being in beta. Supported files include PDF, Word, EPUB, Markdown, plain text, and saved web pages. The app syncs one-way with Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley, and Bookends without modifying the existing reference library. The site says library files, annotations, and notes are stored on the user's disk, with optional configurable cloud sync. The Free plan is billed forever and includes core reading, organizing, and writing tools, with AI free for 7 days. The Lifetime license costs $29.99 as a one-time purchase and includes unlimited AI features, using the user's API key or local models.
