Overview

Students, researchers and other analysts can choose between an offline desktop application and browser-based access, with point-and-click analysis at the center of both. The choice is less about paying for core desktop software than about whether browser users need longer sessions or room for larger datasets.

Key features

jamovi handles statistical tests, regression models and Bayesian analysis through a spreadsheet-like interface: drag variables into an analysis, set options and see results update. That keeps common analytical work accessible without scripting. For users who want to inspect the method or work alongside code, jamovi is powered by R and displays the exact R syntax behind analyses.

It imports SPSS (.sav), SAS, Stata, CSV and Excel files, and saves data, analyses and results together in a shareable, reproducible file. Keeping those pieces together makes it easier to pass work along without losing the analysis setup. Cloud plans include the full module library, and Cloud can connect to OneDrive to open and save jamovi files.

Pricing

The Desktop application is free, free forever, and works offline after installation. It is the clearest choice for individuals who can install software and do not need browser access; there is no paid desktop tier to weigh against its capabilities.

Guest is free, is for everyone and requires no credit card. It provides browser access, point-and-click analyses powered by R and the full module library. The trade-off is practical: guest sessions do not include queue skipping, unlimited session length, longer idle timeouts or larger datasets. It suits occasional or modest browser-based work, but is a weaker fit for extended sessions or bigger data.

Priority has custom pricing, which varies by region, and is aimed at students and researchers. It adds always-available access, unlimited session length, longer idle timeout and larger datasets, addressing the main constraints of Guest. Choose it when those browser limits interrupt the work; compare its regional price against the free offline desktop option if installing locally is feasible.

Teams has custom pricing for groups and institutions. It provides group and classroom subscriptions, centrally managed accounts, private cloud hosting and on-premise deployment in beta. Those administration and hosting options make it relevant to organizations managing access across a group, rather than an individual seeking a personal analysis tool.

Platforms

jamovi is available on Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as the web. The desktop application works completely offline after installation, a meaningful advantage in settings with unreliable connectivity or where browser session limits are unwelcome. Cloud runs in a browser without installation or setup and works on modern browsers, Chromebooks, lab computers, tablets and other devices. OneDrive connection adds a way to open and save jamovi files from Cloud.

Who it's for

Students and researchers who need common statistical analyses without writing code are a natural fit, particularly when they value reproducible files or want to examine the underlying R syntax. The desktop version also works for offline use. Groups and institutions may find Teams a better match when they need managed accounts or private hosting. Users who need long browser sessions or larger datasets should not assume Guest will be enough.

Pros and cons

Free offline desktop: no-cost use does not depend on a browser session or internet connection after installation.
Approachable analysis with visible R syntax: point-and-click controls avoid a coding requirement while keeping the syntax inspectable.
Reproducible handoff: data, analyses and results stay together in one shareable file.
Guest cloud limits: no queue skipping, unlimited sessions, longer idle timeouts or larger datasets, so free browser access is not suited to every workload.
Paid cloud terms are custom: Priority and Teams require a price comparison before an individual or institution can judge their fit.

Alternatives

Statistical Analysis Software is a broader directory for comparing tools in this category.

Stata is worth considering for readers seeking a paid statistical package with a free trial and Linux, macOS and Windows support; its listed Prof+ faculty and staff price is 175.00 USD per year.
SAS/STAT may suit readers looking for a paid option with a free trial and web, self-hosted and desktop platform support; pricing is available by contacting SAS.
EViews is an alternative for readers seeking a freemium tool with a free trial on macOS or Windows. Its listed Academic Single-User License is 700.00 USD per month and requires current academic affiliation.
JASP is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows; its plan is entirely free, with a 64-bit operating system, 4 GB of free disk space and 4 GB RAM minimum.
GraphPad Prism is a paid macOS and Windows option with a free trial; its listed Annual Student plan costs 142.00 USD per year.
LatentGOLD is a freemium alternative for Windows users.
StatPlus is a paid option with a free trial and iOS, macOS, web and Windows support.
BlueSky Statistics is a freemium macOS and Windows application with a free Base plan.

Verdict

Choose jamovi if you want no-cost statistical analysis through a visual workflow, with offline desktop use and a reproducible file format. Its main advantage is pairing accessible analysis with visible R syntax; its main caveat is that free browser access is constrained for longer sessions and larger datasets. If those limits matter and desktop installation is not an option, weigh Priority or Teams against alternatives before committing.
