In their own words
JetStream DR
JetStream DR provides continuous data protection and disaster recovery for VMware workloads. It replicates VM data to object storage, with a stated recovery point objective of near zero, and says it can bring VMs back online within minutes using recovery clusters provisioned on demand. It captures data through VMware vSphere I/O Filters and is managed from a vCenter plug-in or the vSphere Web GUI. Protected VMs do not need installed agents or snapshots, according to the maker. Listed targets include S3-compatible storage such as AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, Cloudian, and MinIO, as well as Azure NetApp Files. Its hypervisor-level software supports on-premises SAN, NAS, vSAN, and HCI environments, with VMware-compatible recovery infrastructure. Coverage is listed for vSphere 7 and 8, with hybrid deployment, cloud backup targets, and off-site replication. JetStream DR for AVS is obtained through Azure Marketplace; on-premises installations use an OVA from JetStream support. The company describes the product as built for service providers supporting customers’ on-premises continuity needs.
OpenEBS
OpenEBS is open-source Kubernetes storage software for developers and platform SREs deploying stateful workloads. It turns storage on Kubernetes worker nodes into local or distributed persistent volumes and operates in userspace rather than relying on Linux kernel-dependent software. Its engines include Replicated PV Mayastor and local volumes using Hostpath, LVM, ZFS, or experimental Rawfile. Mayastor can synchronously replicate volumes across Kubernetes zones. Kubernetes-native operations provide copy-on-write snapshots and clones, while Velero plugins support backup and restore to AWS S3, GCP Object Storage, or MinIO. Volumes expose metrics including IOPS, throughput, latency, and traffic patterns for Prometheus and Grafana. OpenEBS also exposes declarative APIs through Kubernetes custom resources and can be installed with Helm 3.2 or newer. Mayastor disk pools support data-at-rest encryption with user-defined AES-XTS keys. Listed use cases include self-managed databases, observability stacks, CI/CD, object storage, websites, and ML pipelines. Mayastor DiskPools are limited to one block device, and encryption keys cannot be rotated.
