Overview

JianTeX is an academic writing editor for LaTeX and Typst, with desktop, browser-based, and self-hosted versions. It suits writers who want offline local editing but may also need collaboration; its 0.1 alpha release makes it a less certain fit for work that depends on a mature, settled tool.

Key features

Source editing and PDF navigation

The desktop editor pairs syntax highlighting, code completion, and live preview with support for LaTeX and Typst. SyncTeX links the PDF preview to the source in both directions, so writers can move between rendered output and the code behind it. The available engines include Tectonic, Typst, LuaLaTeX, XeLaTeX, and pdflatex. This range makes JianTeX useful for writers with different compilation workflows, though it remains a source editor rather than a visual one.

Templates and portability

More than 35 built-in templates cover examples such as NeurIPS, ICML, IEEE, Chinese theses, and résumés. They offer a starting point for common academic and document formats. Existing Overleaf projects can be imported by Git link or ZIP, and JianTeX can clone projects from Git repositories, easing a move from another workflow.

Offline work and collaboration

The desktop app works offline, keeps projects as ordinary local files, and requires no registration. That is a strong fit for private or disconnected writing. The browser version adds real-time collaboration, with collaborators’ cursors and selections visible, plus automatic snapshots that can be restored from a timeline. Version history can sync to self-hosted Gitea or GitLab servers.

Organizations can self-host JianTeX to keep data within their intranet; collaboration content in those deployments does not pass through third-party servers. Online sign-in supports GitHub and Google OAuth. The combination of local files, Git workflows, and self-hosting gives teams several ways to control where work lives, while the alpha release and rollout of code signing and notarization by platform call for caution in choosing it for a critical workflow.

Pricing

JianTeX is free and open source under the MIT license. Its Free and open source plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the desktop app, online version, and self-hosted option. There are no paid tiers or stated seat or quota limits to weigh against the free plan. It is an unusually broad package for individuals and teams who can work with an alpha product; those needing a more established release may prefer a different editor.

Platforms

JianTeX supports macOS, Windows, and Linux desktop use, plus a web browser and self-hosted deployment. Offline editing is available in the desktop app; browser collaboration is the online route. Code signing and notarization are rolling out separately by platform, so the distribution experience may differ across operating systems.

Who it's for

JianTeX is best suited to academic writers who want LaTeX and Typst in one source editor, work offline, or need browser collaboration and an intranet-hosted option. It is less suitable for anyone who specifically needs visual editing or wants to avoid the uncertainty of an alpha release.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline desktop editing with ordinary local project files avoids dependence on an account or network.
Pros: LaTeX and Typst support, several listed engines, SyncTeX navigation, and more than 35 templates cover a broad source-writing workflow.
Pros: Browser collaboration, restorable snapshots, Git import and cloning, and self-hosting provide options for shared work and data control.
Cons: The 0.1 alpha release is a material caveat for users who need a settled production tool.
Cons: The editor is not visual, and signing and notarization are rolling out per platform.

Alternatives

LaTeX Editors is the broader category to browse when comparing tools. VerbTeX is worth considering for mobile access across Android and iOS as well as desktop and web; its free tier caps local and cloud projects, documents, and uploads at two each. TeXstudio is a free, GPL v2 open-source choice for Windows, Linux, and macOS if desktop coverage matters more than JianTeX’s browser collaboration and self-hosting. Verbosus offers a free tier on Android, iOS, and web, with two-project and two-document limits. Oleafly is a free desktop app for Linux, macOS, and Windows with no subscription, though paid AI providers may charge for usage. Texifier is a paid option with a free trial and platform support for iOS, macOS, and Windows; its listed one-time per-seat prices include 29.99 USD for 101–1000 seats and 31.99 USD for 11–100 seats. Texmaker is a free desktop LaTeX editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with a LaTeX distribution required separately. Texpile is a free offline desktop editor for those same three platforms. TeXworks is another free, open-source desktop application for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose JianTeX if you want a free LaTeX and Typst workflow that can move from offline local editing to collaborative or self-hosted work. Its strongest reason to choose it is that range of working modes without a subscription. Look elsewhere if you need visual editing or would rather not rely on a 0.1 alpha release while platform signing and notarization continue to roll out.
