Overview

Jubler is an open-source desktop editor for creating, editing, and converting text-based subtitles. It is a strong fit for editors who want precise timing controls and repeatable batch workflows across Linux, macOS, or Windows. Its breadth makes it more capable than a basic subtitle utility, though the richer media-preview workflow depends on VLC.

Key features

Jubler handles more than 20 subtitle formats, including SRT, ASS/SSA, WebVTT, TTML, ITT, DFXP, and YouTube subtitles, with SRT and VTT export. That flexibility helps when projects move between delivery requirements; it is especially useful for editors maintaining multiple versions of a subtitle file.

Timing and organization tools include time shifting, frame-rate conversion, splitting and joining entries or files, plus an interactive timeline with draggable subtitle blocks and two-point synchronization. Together they suit detailed alignment work better than quick text-only corrections. Spell checking and regular-expression find and replace provide practical cleanup tools for recurring terms and larger edits; ASpell is suggested for spell checking.

Automatic captioning and translation mode with Azure Translator support widen Jubler beyond manual subtitle editing. Configurable quality rules and TED guidelines compliance checking help review subtitles before delivery. Command-line tools support batch processing and automation, a meaningful advantage for repeat workflows, though less relevant to occasional one-file edits.

Video and frame preview, audio waveform visualization, and real-time subtitle editing during playback rely on VLC. The generic Java version does not support embedded preview, so users choosing that build should expect a more limited review workflow. Jubler is licensed under AGPL-3.0, its privacy policy says it collects no user data or usage information, and GitHub is the channel for issues and support.

Pricing

Free: Free. The desktop subtitle editor is free, and the project relies exclusively on donations. This suits individual editors and teams able to use the software under its AGPL-3.0 license; there is no paid tier to add features or support. VLC is required for video preview and audio waveform features, while the generic Java build omits embedded preview.

Platforms

Jubler runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Downloads include macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel, Linux builds for x86_64 and arm64, Windows, and a generic Java version. VLC is required for video preview and audio waveform features, so users who need those tools should account for that dependency when choosing a build.

Who it's for

Jubler is best for subtitle editors who value format coverage, detailed timing adjustments, validation, and command-line batch work without a subscription. Its automation and multi-format support can justify learning a full desktop editor for recurring projects. It is less suited to users who want a self-contained preview setup without VLC or a web-based captioning workflow.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 20 formats plus SRT and VTT export make it adaptable across subtitle workflows.
Pro: Timeline synchronization, timing conversion, validation rules, and TED guideline checks support careful editing and review.
Pro: Command-line batch tools help automate repeat processing without subscription costs.
Con: VLC is required for video preview and audio waveforms, adding a dependency for the full media-review workflow.
Con: The generic Java build has no embedded preview, limiting its appeal to users who want those features in that build.
Con: Support is directed through GitHub, which may not suit users seeking a dedicated support channel.

Alternatives

Subtitle Software is a useful starting point for comparing options across the category.

Choose Editsub if a web option matters: it runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web, with a free tier capped at 10 subtitle files and a Pro plan at 48.00 USD per year with 1,500 credits per month.

SRTGen is a web and API option with a free tier that includes SRT, VTT, and TXT export, a five-minute screen-recording limit, and 2 GB of storage.

Subtitle Edit is another free, open-source subtitle editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux; consider it if you want a cross-platform alternative.

VideoLocalize is an API and web alternative with a free tier and a free trial.

EZTitles is a Windows-only paid option with a free trial; choose it if you want to evaluate a paid desktop alternative.

Aegisub is another free, open-source editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows, and merits comparison if you want a different desktop option.

Checksub is a paid API, browser-extension, and web option with a free trial; its Junior plan costs 18.00 USD per month.

Zubtitle is a web, iOS, and Android alternative. Its free Bootstrapper plan is limited to two videos per month, adds a watermark, and caps resolution at 720p.

Verdict

Choose Jubler if you need a free desktop toolkit for precise subtitle editing, format conversion, quality checks, and repeatable batch work. Its strongest case is the combination of deep editing controls and automation without a subscription; look elsewhere if VLC-dependent preview or a desktop-only workflow does not fit your needs.
