In their own words
KeyBlaze
KeyBlaze is a typing tutor for touch typing, speed typing and 10-key numeric keypad practice. Its lessons cover home and neighboring keys, capitalization, punctuation and numbers, with drills, prose, poetry and exercises focused on difficult keys. Audio dictation provides transcription practice, while typing games offer another kind of exercise. KeyBlaze measures net and gross words per minute, supports tests at different durations and lets learners set speed goals. Users can import their own lessons, drills and speed tests or focus practice on troublesome words and characters. Keyboard highlighting indicates finger placement, and the software can print course completion certificates. KeyBlaze runs on macOS and Windows and is described by its maker as suitable for all skill levels. For classroom review, results can be saved to a network folder; that folder must be configured separately on each computer. The free version costs nothing, while additional lessons, professional exercises and custom features require an upgrade. The Plus Home license is restricted to non-business use.
Klavaro
Klavaro is a free touch typing tutor built to work with different keyboard layouts and languages. It includes ready-made layouts and an editor for configuring and saving custom ones. Exercises cover basic key positions, adaptability, typing speed, and typing fluidness. Klavaro records exercise performance and can display it in progress charts. For advanced practice, users can bring in text from local files, the clipboard, or drag-and-drop. Its contest module can rank users on a shared computer or send scores to a web server for a public ranking. The site lists translations in dozens of languages, including English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese. Klavaro is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with source code, a Windows installer, and packages listed through operating system repositories and MacPorts. The project is licensed under GNU GPL version 3.0. Support is directed to SourceForge forums, where posting requires an account. The latest manual is available in Portuguese and Esperanto, not English.
