Overview

Khan Academy is a nonprofit learning platform for core academic study, practice and classroom support. It suits students, families and teachers who want free learning resources, with optional AI tutoring and school plans; it is not a route to formal credentials.

Its breadth and free core make it a practical supplement to schoolwork or a starting point for independent study. Personalized practice is meant to help students master concepts and address gaps, but learners who need certificates or degrees should choose another kind of provider.

Key features

The catalog includes more than 840 free courses in core subjects for K–12 and early college. That gives students and educators considerable material to draw on without a platform fee. Khan Academy offers no completion certificates, however, so course completion does not provide a formal credential.

Khanmigo guides learners from elementary school through college toward answers across academic subjects. Its emphasis on guidance makes it a fit for students working through problems, while the subscription’s U.S. and age restrictions narrow who can use it. Teacher tools can assist with lesson planning, feedback, student-work summaries, rubrics and exit tickets; Khan Academy for Teachers also brings standards-aligned practice, progress tracking and AI support together. Educators can import Google Classroom rosters.

The Android and iOS apps support interactive exercises, mastery levels, synced progress, offline video downloads and a scratchpad. Offline video downloads are useful when a connection is unreliable, while the broader feature set supports study beyond a desktop. For younger children, Khan Academy Kids is a separate free, ad-free app for ages 2–8, with interactive books, games and creative lessons.

Pricing

The Khan Academy learning platform is free for independent learners, teachers and parents. Khanmigo teacher tools are also free, though availability depends on educator locale. These free options make the core platform accessible without a subscription; families seeking learner tutoring must pay separately.

Khanmigo Parent Subscription and Khanmigo Learner Subscription each cost 4.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for an individual subscription. Both are available only in the United States. Paid Khanmigo subscribers must be at least 18, live in the United States and have a U.S. billing address, so a learner under 18 cannot subscribe directly; the parent plan is the relevant option for a family member who meets the subscriber requirements.

For U.S. schools and districts with 1,000 or fewer student licenses, Enterprise Starter costs 10.00 USD per year, billed $10/student/year. Larger organizations can choose Enterprise, which has custom pricing and covers more than 1,000 student licenses. It adds administrator reporting and data insights, single sign-on, automated rostering through Clever or ClassLink, and live professional learning and implementation support. Those rollout and administration features distinguish it from the free individual platform, but are aimed at larger school deployments.

Platforms

Khan Academy runs on web, Android and iOS. Its apps add offline video downloads and a scratchpad alongside interactive exercises and synced progress. Khan Academy Kids is also a free, ad-free app for children ages 2–8. District plans state that student privacy and data security are SOC-audited and FERPA- and COPPA-compliant, with a VPAT for WCAG 2.1AA. Khan Academy’s privacy policy says it uses reasonable organizational and technical safeguards to protect personal information.

Who it's for

Khan Academy is a strong fit for K–12 and early-college students who want free academic coursework and practice, parents supporting a child’s learning, and teachers who need classroom resources. Districts needing centralized reporting, rostering, single sign-on and implementation support can consider Enterprise. It is less suitable for learners whose goal is a certificate or degree, or for people outside the United States seeking a paid Khanmigo subscription.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 840 free courses cover core K–12 and early-college subjects, giving students and teachers a broad resource without a platform subscription.
Pro: Mobile apps combine synced progress with offline video downloads, which helps students continue studying away from a reliable connection.
Pro: Free teacher tools and a dedicated, ad-free app for ages 2–8 extend the offering to educators and younger children.
Con: There are no completion certificates or degree programs, making it a poor choice for learners who need formal recognition of study.
Con: Paid Khanmigo subscriptions require an adult subscriber in the United States with a U.S. billing address, limiting access for families outside that market.
Con: Enterprise pricing is custom, so larger schools cannot compare its cost from a fixed public rate.

Alternatives

For a wider directory of school-focused options, compare K-12 Curriculum Platforms; readers focused on adaptive practice can browse Adaptive Learning Software. Learning Gamification Software is relevant when game-based learning is the priority, while Preschool Learning Apps narrows the search to young children. For broader online course catalogs, see MOOC Platforms; for focused exam preparation, see Exam Prep Apps.

MobyMax is another freemium option, with a free educator version that has limited access compared with licensed features. Reading Eggs may suit families looking for reading and math programs for up to four children, with a monthly plan at 13.99 USD per month. Eureka Math offers free PreK–12 PDF curriculum materials, including student and teacher editions, maps and overviews.

Imagine Learning is a paid option for K–12 school and district solutions with custom pricing. CK-12 FlexBook 2.0 offers a free customizable online textbook, with content varying by subject and book. Amplify Classroom gives individual educators free K–12 math, literacy and science lessons, a Teacher Dashboard and Polypad manipulatives, with partial content customization. OpenSciEd provides free curriculum and resources for educators or parents, with registration required to download. Reveal Math is a paid option with one- and two-year student bundles for grades 6–8.

Verdict

Choose Khan Academy for broad, free academic practice across web and mobile, especially if you want resources for students, families and teachers in one platform. Its main advantage is the combination of a large free course catalog and supporting tools; look elsewhere if you need credentials or paid Khanmigo access outside the United States.
