In their own words

kind

kind runs local Kubernetes clusters with Docker container nodes, mainly for Kubernetes testing; local development and CI are also listed uses. It bootstraps cluster nodes with kubeadm and supports multi-node setups, including high availability. A configuration file can define worker and control-plane nodes, port mappings, and Kubernetes versions.

The tool can build Kubernetes release builds from source or use pre-published builds. It can detect Docker, Podman, or nerdctl as its container provider, including rootless providers subject to host and provider requirements. Users can load Docker images or an image archive into a cluster. Documentation covers ingress and Gateway API configuration with cloud-provider-kind, private registry workflows, and Kubernetes API audit logging.

Talos Linux

Talos Linux is an operating system designed for Kubernetes, with machine state set declaratively and node management handled through a secured gRPC API using mutual TLS. It has no SSH, shell, or package manager. The system contains fewer than 50 binaries and has a 100MB footprint. Operating system and Kubernetes upgrades are delivered together in an atomic image that supports rollback. Security capabilities include CIS hardening, SELinux, and trusted boot; Talos itself does not collect telemetry. It runs on cloud platforms, bare metal, virtualized systems, single-board computers, and local Docker or QEMU environments, on amd64 and arm64 architectures. Talos Omni manages cluster provisioning, upgrades, configuration, and backups, and is available as SaaS or self-hosted. The open-source Talos Linux plan is free. Talos Enterprise Linux costs $1,000 a year, billed per node, with a 10-node minimum. That plan includes Omni, 24/7/365 support, and FIPS 140-3 builds.
