Overview

Mautic brings email marketing, campaign automation, lead management and forms into one system. Teams can personalize and A/B test marketing and transactional emails, then use campaign journeys to tailor touchpoints. The combination is more useful for sustained, multi-step engagement than for organizations that only need occasional bulk email.

As open-source software, Mautic can be installed on a server or hosting chosen by the user. It emphasizes data sovereignty and offers configurable tracking controls, IP anonymization and cleanup tasks to support GDPR, CCPA and other privacy requirements. Those controls do not remove the operational responsibility of running the installation.

Key features

Campaigns, email and leads

A click-and-drag campaign builder supports complex campaign design, while drag-and-drop tools create mobile-optimized emails and landing pages. Lead scoring, triggers, groups and funnel stages help teams organize follow-up; multichannel data collection builds contact profiles. Forms can be embedded in landing pages, websites, applications and popup modals, giving marketers several ways to collect leads.

CRM and SMS integrations, webhooks, a plugin marketplace and a REST API provide routes to connect Mautic with other systems. Multiple sending domains can be authenticated in one installation. Managed hosting can be scoped around CMS, CRM and analytics integration needs, which is useful when a team needs implementation tailored to its existing stack.

Privacy and support

Mautic's privacy controls and self-hosting option give organizations more direct influence over data handling. The Mautic Security Team handles vulnerabilities in core and officially supported plugins, coordinates disclosures and issues CVEs in its namespace. Free multilingual community forums are the troubleshooting route; partners can provide hosting, support, training and consultancy. That community option keeps a basic support channel available, but organizations needing dedicated assistance should consider managed service or a partner.

Pricing

The free Download (self-host) option is free. It avoids a software subscription and includes the full self-hosted route, but requires CLI, web-server configuration, database, PHP and cron-job knowledge. Mautic recommends a virtual private or dedicated server rather than cheap shared hosting, so the free download is best for technically capable teams that can provide suitable infrastructure.

The Mautic Trial is a 14-day free trial with no credit card required and access to all Mautic features. It is a useful way to evaluate the managed product before committing, but it is temporary rather than a continuing free hosted tier.

Mautic Essential costs 247.50 EUR per month when billed annually, or €275/mo when billed quarterly. It includes managed shared hosting, email service, up to 50K contacts, up to 50K emails per month and a sending rate of up to 100 emails per minute. This is the clearest managed fit for teams within those quotas that want hosting, maintenance, updates and security patches handled for them. The annual rate lowers the stated monthly price, while quarterly billing costs more.

Mautic Professional costs from €1237/mo and provides managed dedicated hosting, from 50K contacts extendable up to 3M, dynamic content, advanced workflows, a dedicated support manager and possible custom development. It is aimed at larger operations that need dedicated infrastructure and more involved workflows; its starting price is a significant step up from Essential. Mautic Enterprise has custom pricing for large-scale operations and deep integrations, with up to 6M emails per month and up to 4,000 emails per minute. That capacity makes it the enterprise-scale option, but pricing requires a custom arrangement.

Managed Mautic does not restrict the number of team members. The 50K contact figure also appears as a general included-contact limit, while Professional explicitly starts at 50K and can extend higher. Forty percent of managed-plan revenue goes to the community, linking the paid route to ongoing community support.

Platforms

Mautic runs on the web, offers an API, and can be self-hosted. The self-hosted route trades managed upkeep for control and technical responsibility; managed hosting includes maintenance, updates and security patches. No mobile platform is included in this set of options.

Who it's for

Mautic is a strong candidate for small and medium-sized businesses, freelancers, universities and larger organizations that need campaign automation, lead scoring and flexible data handling. It is especially appropriate for teams with technical staff or a budget for managed hosting and integration work. It is a poor fit for buyers who want a low-maintenance, inexpensive hosted service without the operational demands of self-hosting or the cost of managed plans.

Pros and cons

Pros: Open-source self-hosting gives technically capable teams control over infrastructure and data handling.
Pros: Email testing, campaign journeys, scoring, forms and integrations cover a substantial marketing-automation workflow in one product.
Pros: Managed plans include hosting and upkeep, and do not cap the number of team members.
Cons: Self-hosting requires command-line and server-stack knowledge, and cheap shared hosting is discouraged.
Cons: Managed hosting starts at 247.50 EUR per month when billed annually, with quarterly billing at €275/mo.
Cons: Essential caps monthly email volume at 50K and sending speed at 100 emails per minute, which may constrain larger campaigns.

Alternatives

Freshmarketer is worth considering for a team starting with a smaller free allowance: its free plan includes 100 marketing contacts and 500 monthly email sends. GetResponse is an option for buyers who prioritize unlimited monthly email sends and one custom automation workflow on its Starter plan, though the stated price is 1915.58 USD per month.

Braze is another paid option, with a free trial and plans requiring contact for pricing. Mailchimp may suit a small team that can work within its free plan's 250 contacts, 500 emails per month, 250 emails per day, one audience and one seat. Manago AI is a paid alternative with a free trial and active-contact and SMS quantities shown for its platform plan, but requires contacting the provider for pricing.

ActiveCampaign is a paid alternative with a free trial and an annually billed Starter plan for personalized email campaigns. Klaviyo offers a free plan for up to 250 active profiles, 500 email sends per month and $5 of mobile messages per month. Twilio Segment is an alternative for teams considering a free plan with 1,000 visitors per month, 500,000 Reverse ETL records per month, two sources and 700+ integrations.

Verdict

Choose Mautic if you need serious campaign and lead-automation capabilities and can support self-hosting or justify managed hosting for greater operational control. Its strongest reason to choose is the combination of open-source flexibility, privacy controls and broad campaign tools. Look elsewhere if you need inexpensive, low-effort managed marketing automation: the free route still requires infrastructure expertise, while the managed entry plan costs 247.50 EUR per month when billed annually.
