Overview

Launchpad is a project platform for hosting code and coordinating software work, with particular strength in packaging and localization. It suits open-source maintainers who want contributors, bug reports, builds, and community support connected in one workflow. For commercial projects, private features are conditional on Canonical authorization.

Key features

Git hosting includes code review and merge proposals, and code changes can be connected to bug reports. Launchpad can also integrate reports from Bugzilla, Trac, GitLab, and Mantis, a useful bridge for projects whose contributors already work across those trackers. The tradeoff is that this is a project collaboration environment, not just a code repository.

Built-in CI/CD builds and distributes Debian packages, snaps, rocks, charms, and OCI images. Supported architectures include AMD64, AMD64v3, ARM, and RISC-V. That packaging breadth makes Launchpad a strong fit for projects distributing through these formats; projects with different release needs should not assume the listed build formats cover them.

Translation tools support importing, exporting, and sharing localization work. Blueprints track ideas and project work, and Launchpad Answers handles community help requests and FAQs. Together these features serve contributor communities, though teams seeking only source hosting may find the wider coordination model unnecessary.

A REST-style API, the launchpadlib Python client, and webhooks support scripting and external integrations. Launchpad documents least-privilege access, restrictive networking, and fine-grained permissions. Traffic is secured by TLS except package downloads, which are cryptographically verified on the client side. Its security documentation said automatic monitoring was not in place as of July 2023 and noted a recent external penetration test; teams should weigh that monitoring gap when assessing security requirements. Private security bug reports and project privacy controls are supported.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Open-source projects	0.00 USD per free	For open-source software projects
Commercial subscription	Custom pricing	Private code branches, private bugs by default, private teams and mailing lists, and private PPAs; requires Canonical authorization

The free plan is the clear fit for open-source projects, with no stated seat or usage cap. Commercial teams can request the private capabilities, but access depends on Canonical authorization and the subscription price is custom. That makes Launchpad less straightforward for organizations that need private collaboration without an approval step.

Platforms

Launchpad is available on the web and Linux, offers an API, and can be self-hosted. Those options suit teams that need programmatic access or want self-hosting; the platform listing does not establish support for other desktop operating systems.

Who it's for

Launchpad is best suited to open-source projects that need more than repository hosting: package builds, bug coordination, localization, planning, and community help all have a place in the same platform. Its commercial subscription may suit teams that need private code and project spaces, provided Canonical authorization works for their requirements. It is a weaker fit for organizations that need guaranteed automatic security monitoring or private features with no authorization dependency.

Pros and cons

Pros

Connects Git review and merge proposals with bug tracking, including integrations with four named external trackers.
Builds and distributes several package and image formats across architectures including ARM and RISC-V.
Provides localization, project planning, community support, and automation tools alongside code hosting.
Offers a free plan for open-source projects and private commercial options.

Cons

Commercial privacy features require Canonical authorization, adding a dependency for teams handling private projects.
Automatic security monitoring was not in place as of July 2023, a material caveat for security-sensitive teams.
The documented build formats make it a more natural fit for projects using those distribution workflows than for teams seeking an unspecified general-purpose pipeline.

Alternatives

For projects focused on game development, Game Version Control Software may be a more relevant category. Teams choosing a tracker for game issues can compare Game Bug Tracking Software; Launchpad's own tracker is broader, with integrations for Bugzilla, Trac, GitLab, and Mantis. For unrelated desktop needs, see Window Management Software, Boot Manager Software, Font Management Software, or PDF Readers.

DisplayFusion, Rectangle, spectrwm, awesome, dwm, Qtile, Reloop, and Amethyst are alternatives in other software categories.

Verdict

Choose Launchpad if an open-source project needs code collaboration, packaging, localization, and community coordination in one free platform. Its main advantage is the range of project work it brings together; look elsewhere if you need private commercial collaboration without authorization or require automatic security monitoring.
