Overview

Canonical positions MicroK8s for development and production across public clouds, edge deployments, IoT and embedded software platforms. It is a minimal, CNCF-certified distribution that packages upstream Kubernetes services together. The same platform can serve a small workstation setup or scale into a production cluster, so teams can keep a consistent Kubernetes distribution across varied environments.

That breadth does not make it a managed service: MicroK8s is self-hosted, and teams remain responsible for the infrastructure it runs on. Multi-cluster management, autoscaling, rolling updates and policy controls are supported, giving operators useful cluster capabilities without a license fee.

Key features

One node is enough to get started, but high availability requires at least three MicroK8s nodes. At that size, Dqlite-backed HA provides resilience and automatic recovery after a node failure. It is a practical growth path for teams that want to begin small, though a single-node setup does not get that resilience.

Cluster API automates cluster creation and lifecycle management through YAML manifests. It supports rolling HA upgrades and in-place control-plane upgrades for non-HA clusters, which helps standardize cluster changes. Security updates apply automatically by default and roll back if they fail; Kubernetes upgrades are available with one command. These safeguards reduce routine upgrade work, but do not remove the broader responsibilities of self-hosting.

Strict confinement limits MicroK8s and its container workloads to explicitly granted files, system resources and hardware. That makes it relevant where workload isolation matters. Canonical maintains core addons, while community addons broaden the selection with services such as certificate management and DNS. Built-in examples include Prometheus, Jaeger, Istio, LinkerD, Knative, DNS, a registry and dashboard services.

The GPU addon uses the NVIDIA GPU Operator and supports NVIDIA Multi-Instance GPU, making MicroK8s a candidate for AI, machine-learning and HPC workloads that need NVIDIA GPU capabilities. Canonical also advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA and up to 15 years of security maintenance through Ubuntu Pro for MicroK8s and related infrastructure; those are paid-coverage considerations, not part of the no-license-fee core.

Pricing

The MicroK8s distribution is free, with no license fees. Ubuntu Pro Personal is also Free for up to five machines, a fit for personal use within that cap. These free options make the software accessible, but the paid Ubuntu Pro tiers are the route to workstation or server subscriptions and enterprise support.

Ubuntu Pro Workstation costs 25.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year. It suits workstation deployments needing a subscription without the stated 24/7 support tier. For full workstation support, Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Workstation costs 300.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year.

On servers, Ubuntu Pro Server with unlimited VMs costs 500.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year. The 24/7 infrastructure-support option is Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Server at 1775.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year and including unlimited VMs. Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Server full support costs 3400.00 USD per year, billed per machine per year and also includes unlimited VMs. These tiers distinguish infrastructure support from full support; choose according to the support scope required. A free trial is offered.

Platforms

MicroK8s runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted deployments. The getting-started guidance allows a minimum of 540MB memory, but recommends at least 4GB memory and 20GB disk for workloads; the lower figure is a starting point, not a sensible workload target. Windows installation recommends Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise and requires at least 4GB available RAM and 40GB storage, a more demanding footprint than the general minimum.

Who it's for

MicroK8s fits developers who want local Kubernetes, operators building self-hosted production clusters, and teams deploying to cloud, edge, IoT or embedded environments. It is especially relevant when a team values automated cluster lifecycle management, strict confinement, optional GPU workloads or a route from single-node development to HA. Teams seeking hosted cluster operations should look elsewhere; MicroK8s is self-hosted.

Pros and cons

Pros: No license fees and a path from one node to Dqlite-backed HA make it possible to start small and scale resilience as needed.
Pros: Cluster API, automatic security updates with rollback and one-command Kubernetes upgrades address recurring cluster lifecycle work.
Pros: Strict confinement and NVIDIA GPU Operator support cover isolation and GPU workload needs within the same distribution.
Cons: HA requires at least three nodes, so a small single-node installation cannot provide node-failure recovery.
Cons: The platform is self-hosted; the team must operate its own infrastructure.
Cons: The 99.9% SLA and up to 15 years of maintenance are tied to Ubuntu Pro coverage, with support tiers adding per-machine annual costs.

Alternatives

Choose Google Kubernetes Engine if a paid option with a free tier and free trial better fits your cluster plans; its free tier provides $74.40 in monthly credits per billing account for zonal and Autopilot clusters. Consider Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform if you want its free, Apache-licensed Community Edition or need to evaluate its consumption-based Enterprise Edition.

.NET is another option in this category, with a free plan covering up to 1,000 nodes. Civo Block Storage is a storage alternative with usage calculated hourly and billed monthly. HashiCorp Nomad offers a free plan alongside customizable enterprise plans.

For a Kubernetes option without a license fee, consider Kubernetes. KubeSphere offers a free, open-source Community Edition described as an enterprise-grade Kubernetes container platform. Mirantis Kubernetes Engine is a paid, subscription-only service with a free trial license available on request.

Verdict

Choose MicroK8s if you want a no-license-fee Kubernetes distribution you can self-host, automate and grow from a single node toward high availability. Its security and lifecycle features give operators useful control, but teams that need an SLA or extended maintenance should budget for Ubuntu Pro, while teams that do not want to run their own infrastructure should choose another approach.
