Overview

LetterSchool moves children through three steps for learning letters: tapping guided points, tracing, then writing independently. Visual and auditory feedback, including correction as each line is drawn, gives beginners help while they form letters instead of leaving them to judge the result alone. The approach is most useful for children still learning the basics, rather than confident writers looking for broader writing practice.

Beyond letters, activities cover phonics, numbers and spelling. The app is designed for ages three to eight. Its school version supports pre-K through grades one to three, with handwriting levels generally aimed at younger pupils and spelling levels at older ones. English school users can choose Handwriting Without Tears, Zaner-Bloser or D’Nealian styles. Supported languages are English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Dutch, Japanese, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish and Arabic.

Key features

The progression from prompts to independent writing gives LetterSchool a clear instructional focus. Line-by-line correction and visual and sound feedback make the practice more guided than simple tracing. Offline access is useful for families who want practice without relying on a connection, and printable activities extend the offering beyond the screen.

LetterSchool supports three child profiles, which can accommodate a small household without separate installations. The maker describes the app as ad-free, without social media, privacy-protective and equipped with restricted settings. Its privacy policy says it does not seek to collect personally identifiable information directly from children under 13 and does not collect or store payment data.

Pricing

The Free app costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the first five letters in uppercase and lowercase, five shapes, and three CVC flashcards covering nine words. That is enough to introduce the format, but not a deep library of practice for a child who wants to continue. Paid access starts at $1.92/mo (annual), and a seven-day trial is referenced. Monthly, quarterly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically; cancellation is through App Store settings.

The School student license costs 9.99 USD per once and is purchased through Apple School Manager. Orders of more than 20 licenses receive a 50% discount. This one-time license is the school-oriented option, but it is limited to iOS. Families unable to afford a subscription can apply for a free one; the maker also says children in Afghanistan can access LetterSchool for free.

Platforms

The general app supports Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. The school offering is narrower: LetterSchool – Block Letters is currently available only on iOS. That distinction matters for schools choosing devices; a mixed-platform classroom cannot use the school version across its device range.

Who it's for

LetterSchool is a good match for young children who need guided letter formation and for parents or educators looking to combine handwriting practice with early phonics, number and spelling activities. Its school levels cover early grades, while the three-profile support and printable activities also make it practical for family use. It is a weaker fit for older students or anyone seeking an unrestricted free handwriting library.

Pros and cons

Pros: Three-stage letter practice with line-level correction gives beginners structured guidance rather than unguided repetition.
Pros: Activities extend to phonics, numbers and spelling, and the app supports a broad range of listed languages.
Pros: Offline access, printable activities and three child profiles support flexible practice at home.
Cons: The free app is capped at five letters, five shapes and three CVC flashcards, so it is only a small sample.
Cons: Subscription plans auto-renew, and the school license is restricted to iOS.

Alternatives

For a broader handwriting-app shortlist, see Handwriting Practice Apps; for early-learning options, see Preschool Learning Apps.

Kanji Dojo is a free, open-source option across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Writing Wizard also has a free app, with remaining letters and custom words requiring an in-app purchase or subscription. Handwriting Repeater is a free option for Android, iOS and web, with no account requirement or limits on sentences or repetitions.

Hanzi Writer, Nazoru, Copybook Club, Cursive: Learn Cursive and KanjiPad are also alternatives.

Verdict

Choose LetterSchool for a young learner who needs guided, feedback-rich handwriting practice with early literacy activities in the same app. The staged instruction and child-focused safeguards are its strongest reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if the small free allowance, recurring subscription or iOS-only school edition does not fit.
