Overview

Zoho Books is accounting software for businesses that need bookkeeping and stock management in the same workflow. It suits solo operators as well as growing teams, particularly those handling physical goods. Its strongest case is the breadth of its accounting and inventory tools; the free plan’s revenue ceiling and quotas make it less suitable for businesses likely to outgrow them.

Key features

The accounting toolkit covers invoicing, bills, banking, expenses, projects, reporting and online payments. Bank feeds and automated reconciliation can reduce manual work in keeping records current, while receipt capture supports expense tracking. Accountant access is also included, which is useful for businesses that work with an outside accounting professional.

Inventory goes beyond basic stock counts: Zoho Books supports reorder alerts, multiple warehouses, serial numbers, batch tracking and bin locations. That makes it a stronger fit for businesses managing physical products than a tool centered on invoices and expenses alone. Foreign transactions are supported, with exchange rates applied automatically in real time.

Dedicated iOS and Android apps sync changes across devices and back up data to the cloud. Transactions are secured with two-factor authentication and SSL encryption, and Zoho Books does not store credit card information. Support runs Monday to Friday, 9 am to 9 pm ET, with email, voice and chat channels varying by plan. Professional and higher plans add team chat, voice, video and screen sharing.

Pricing

Zoho Books has an ongoing free plan for businesses with annual revenue at or below $50K. It includes one user and one accountant, 1,000 invoices and 1,000 expenses annually, and 50 receipt autoscans per month. The five scheduled-report limit may be restrictive for businesses that rely on regular reporting, and the revenue ceiling means this is best for solopreneurs and micro businesses that remain within it.

Standard costs $15 per month with annual billing, or $20 per month at the monthly price. It supports three users, 5,000 invoices and 5,000 expenses annually, and 200 receipt autoscans per month. This is the sensible step up for a small team that has outgrown the free plan’s revenue cap or invoice allowance, though the receipt quota remains modest.

Professional costs $40 per month with annual billing, or $50 monthly. It raises the allowance to five users, 10,000 invoices, 10,000 bills/expenses and 200 receipt autoscans per month. Premium is $60 per month with annual billing, or $70 monthly, for 10 users, 25,000 invoices, 25,000 bills/expenses and 1,000 receipt autoscans monthly. The larger receipt allowance makes Premium a more practical fit for teams processing many receipts.

Elite costs $120 per month with annual billing, or $150 monthly. It keeps the 10-user limit while raising annual allowances to 100,000 invoices and 100,000 bills/expenses, with 1,000 receipt autoscans per month; it also adds online sales channels. Ultimate costs $240 per month with annual billing, or $275 monthly, and includes 15 users, 100,000 invoices, 100,000 bills/expenses and 3 million records/rows. Those upper tiers are aimed at larger workloads, but Elite’s user count is unchanged from Premium, so its value depends on needing the higher transaction allowances and sales-channel capability.

Paid plans have a 14-day free trial. The service is pay-as-you-go, has no contract commitment and can be cancelled. Annual billing lowers the stated monthly price, but readers should compare that price with the monthly option when choosing a term.

Platforms

Zoho Books has dedicated apps for iOS and Android, with changes syncing between devices and automatic cloud backup. These apps support mobile use alongside its accounting and inventory capabilities.

Who it's for

Zoho Books is a good fit for solo operators and small businesses that want invoicing, banking, expense tracking and inventory controls together, with accountant access for outside help. Growing teams can move up through plans as invoice, expense, user or receipt-processing needs rise. Businesses that exceed $50K in annual revenue, need more than five scheduled reports on the free plan, or expect to outgrow its quotas should compare paid tiers before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inventory includes warehouses, reorder alerts, serial and batch tracking, and bin locations, making the product useful beyond basic bookkeeping.
Pros: The free plan is indefinite for businesses at or below $50K in annual revenue and includes an accountant seat.
Pros: Annual billing lowers the stated monthly price across paid tiers, and subscriptions can be cancelled without a contract commitment.
Cons: The free plan is capped by both revenue and usage, including 1,000 invoices and expenses annually, 50 receipt autoscans monthly, and five scheduled reports.
Cons: Receipt autoscans stay at 200 per month on Standard and Professional, so receipt-heavy businesses need Premium or above for a larger allowance.

Verdict

Choose Zoho Books if you want accounting, accountant access and detailed inventory controls in one service, with mobile apps and plans that scale beyond a small operation. Its indefinite free option is attractive for micro businesses under the revenue cap, but the quotas and report limit are meaningful constraints. Look elsewhere if your business is likely to cross that ceiling or needs more reporting and receipt capacity without moving to a paid tier.
