Overview

Seventeen subject libraries and more than 2,000 textbooks give instructors a substantial base of material to adapt. Chapters can be remixed into custom books, and downloads in PDF, EPUB, and editable formats support both offline reading and further editing. This is a better fit for courses that benefit from reusable, changeable content than for readers seeking only a fixed commercial textbook.

Individual educators can create, adapt, and host OER free of charge. Institutions in K–12 and higher education can join LibreNet, though the free core platform allows up to five custom textbooks per institution. That cap may be restrictive for campuses standardizing materials across many courses.

Key features

Assessment and interactive content

ADAPT supports formative and summative assessment, with a shared bank of more than 240,000 openly licensed elements. Textbook pages can include Jupyter Notebooks, ADAPT homework questions, 3D visualizations, and videos. The combination lets instructors connect reading with practice, but courses that need these tools should check which paid service tier covers the required functions.

LMS and identity connections

LibreTexts services can be embedded in institutional learning management systems over a secure connection, with optional grade and assessment exchange. A guide covers imports into Canvas, Moodle, and D2L using IMS Common Cartridge 1.1, and also mentions Blackboard support. Institutional Google Workspace or Microsoft Active Directory can be used to sign in; those services share only the user's email with LibreTexts.

Accessibility, privacy, and support

LibreTexts aims to meet or exceed Revised Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA standards, and audits accessibility at major development milestones. It does not accept advertising or sell, rent, or lease user lists. It describes collecting voluntarily supplied personal information and anonymous Google Analytics demographics, while acknowledging that it cannot guarantee protection against unauthorized disclosure. Free support tickets, monthly webinars, weekly office hours, and Academy lessons provide useful help for educators adopting the platform.

Pricing

The core platform is free and includes textbook access, instructor ADAPT access, general-use textbooks, and free H5P and ADAPT authoring, with a limit of five custom textbooks per institution. It is the sensible starting point for individual educators and institutions whose needs fit that cap.

ADAPT, The Forge, and Jupyter Hub each show a free option and a rate of $15 per student every six months, with unlimited courses. ADAPT covers homework and assessment; The Forge adds a student writing platform with a word processor, slide decks, spreadsheets, and process analytics; Jupyter Hub provides collaborative notebooks for coding courses. California institutions receive ADAPT free. All-Access is $30 per student every six months for unlimited courses and combines ADAPT Homework, Jupyter Hub, and The Forge. These per-student charges make the paid tiers more relevant to institutions that need those services across courses than to educators using only the free core.

LibreNet Consortium affiliate membership costs $1,250 per campus per year and is available only with full membership at campus or system level. Full membership costs $2,500 per year and includes unlimited custom textbooks, early access to new technologies, a branded Campus Commons page, and two Academy Online training seats. The campus-level options suit institutions seeking broader customization or consortium services; the affiliate option is not a standalone entry point.

Platforms

LibreTexts supports Android, iOS, and web access. Offline access, annotations, and read-aloud support extend its usefulness beyond online course delivery.

Who it's for

Choose LibreTexts if you teach with open materials and want to adapt books, add assessment, or connect resources to an institutional LMS. It also suits institutions willing to coordinate campus membership for expanded customization. It is less compelling for a course that needs only a single unchanging text or for a campus that cannot work within the core's five-book cap and does not want paid institutional services.

Pros and cons

Pros: A large, remixable library and editable downloads give instructors room to tailor materials rather than accept a fixed text.
Pros: Assessment, interactive content, and LMS embedding can bring reading and course activities together.
Pros: Free authoring, support, and educator training lower the barrier to trying the platform.
Cons: The free core caps custom textbooks at five per institution, which can limit broader campus use.
Cons: Several learning services have per-student charges, while consortium membership is priced per campus annually.
Cons: LibreTexts says it cannot guarantee protection against unauthorized disclosure, a consideration for institutions assessing data risk.

Alternatives

OpenStax is a better fit when free online textbooks and PDF downloads are the priority; its low-cost print editions and separately priced OpenStax Assignable provide other options.

SkillsCommons suits readers looking for a free repository to browse and download materials without an account. DIKSHA is a free alternative built on Sunbird, which is described as MIT-licensed open-source technology. African Storybook is the more focused choice for openly licensed picture storybooks, with free Reader and Maker apps.

CK-12 FlexBook 2.0 is worth considering for a free, customizable online textbook, with content varying by subject and book. Saylor Academy fits learners seeking self-paced courses and free study materials, with certificates free and proctored exams priced at $5 per exam. Lumen Learning is another freemium option, with a per-student course support fee and a separately priced Success Accelerator. Open Michigan is a free alternative.

Verdict

LibreTexts is a strong choice for educators and institutions that want to adapt open textbooks and connect them with assessment and interactive course content. Its free core makes it approachable, but the five-book institutional cap and paid student and campus tiers matter as use expands. Look elsewhere if you need a straightforward single-text reading experience without course-building needs or campus-level costs.
