Overview

Lightning Bolt builds schedules around coverage rules, time-off requests, shift preferences, and specialty requirements. Its optimization process weighs staff availability and skills against those constraints, a useful approach for teams coordinating complex coverage rather than organizations seeking only a basic rota.

The product is designed for practices of any size, with no technical limit on providers or locations. Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Miami, Lightning Bolt has moved its scheduling site to PerfectServe.com; customer accounts, schedules, and logins remain unchanged.

Key features

Scheduling and coverage management

Alongside rule-based schedule building, Lightning Bolt supports availability management, shift templates, self-scheduling, and open-shift management. These features cover both initial planning and ongoing schedule coordination. Their value depends on how well the configured rules match a practice’s specialties and workflows, so buyers should settle that fit before committing.

Mobile and desktop access

Subscribers can access updated schedules on iOS and Android, and a native iPhone app is free. The system is web-based and fully functional on Mac, Windows, and Linux. This range suits clinical teams moving between desktop planning and mobile schedule access.

Implementation, integrations, and security

A dedicated implementation consultant guides data gathering, training, and configuration. The typical rollout takes 4–6 weeks, with timing adjustable to administrator availability. Lightning Bolt integrates with ClinConnect and Microsoft Outlook; PerfectServe says it supports more than 250 integrations overall. Certified Epic and Oracle integration depth should be confirmed before procurement.

PerfectServe describes its security methods as industry-standard and says it encrypts sensitive information, including personal health information, with SSL where appropriate. The privacy policy covers Lightning Bolt websites and the Balanced Physician Scheduler mobile app; it says physician phone numbers are not sold or shared beyond what is needed to provide services.

Technical support is available by phone, email, or request submission from 8 AM–8 PM Eastern Time.

Pricing

Lightning Bolt is paid, with custom pricing. The Lightning Bolt Clinical Team Scheduling plan uses per-seat licenses, and a net increase in scheduled individuals requires additional licenses. That makes the product’s broad technical scale different from unlimited commercial usage: practices should account for how many people they schedule when evaluating cost. The licensing model may suit organizations with a defined roster, but growing teams should factor in the added licenses.

Platforms

Lightning Bolt supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Mobile access is available to subscribers, while the maker also offers a free native iPhone app.

Who it's for

Lightning Bolt is a good fit for practices scheduling physicians and other clinical staff around coverage, availability, skills, and shift preferences. Its consultant-led implementation and support across common desktop and mobile platforms favor organizations that want help configuring a rule-based system. It is less compelling for buyers who cannot establish the fit of their specialty workflows, Epic or Oracle integration, or per-seat licensing before purchase.

Pros and cons

Pros: Optimization weighs availability, skills, and preferences against coverage constraints, which can help with scheduling beyond a simple rota.
Pros: Self-scheduling, open-shift management, availability management, and shift templates support the wider scheduling workflow.
Pros: A dedicated consultant and a typical 4–6 week implementation provide a defined path to configuration and training.
Cons: Per-seat licensing means adding scheduled individuals requires more licenses, so staffing growth can affect cost.
Cons: Epic and Oracle integration depth needs confirmation, an important procurement step for organizations relying on those systems.
Cons: Custom pricing makes it difficult to compare the plan’s cost without contacting the vendor.

Alternatives

For a broader browse of healthcare scheduling options, see Healthcare Staff Scheduling Software; programs focused on residency schedules can compare the Medical Residency Scheduling Software category.

TigerConnect Physician Scheduling is another paid option across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, with enterprise-wide pricing available through sales. Choose it when enterprise-wide pricing is the preferred purchasing model.

Aurora-Med is a paid alternative for Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows.

Amion offers a Pro plan with up to 10 schedules, self-serve setup, mobile and desktop access, and custom rules, plus an Enterprise plan with unlimited schedules and organization-wide settings. Consider Pro when a program needs no more than 10 schedules and values self-serve setup.

CoverED offers a bundled residency program license at 30.00 USD per month, billed $25/mo annual, as well as a free trial. It is worth considering for residency programs seeking its bundled license.

GME Manager has a 30-day free LaunchPad Pilot that is self-guided, requires no credit card, and carries no commitment to convert. Choose it when a no-cost pilot is the priority.

MedHub and New Innovations are paid alternatives with Android, iOS, and web platforms; MedHub also supports API access.

Resident Vacation Scheduler has a free iOS plan for up to five residents, as well as a paid Starter plan. Consider it for a small residency program that needs a free option capped at five residents.

Verdict

Choose Lightning Bolt if your clinical practice needs schedules optimized around coverage rules, staff availability, skills, and preferences, and you value guided implementation. Look elsewhere if per-seat licensing or unconfirmed integration depth makes it a poor fit for your budget or systems.
