| Spec score · Minecraft Permissions Plugins | 8.7 (#2) | 6.5 (#7) |
| Developer API | Its public, semantically versioned API is provided by the plugin for other plugins to integrate with and retrieve data from LuckPerms. | Other plugins can query and change player roles and permissions through the ServerRoles API, and listen for a cancellable role-change event that fires for online players. |
| Integrations | LuckPerms exposes placeholders through PlaceholderAPI, MVdWPlaceholderAPI, and Fabric PlaceholderAPI hooks. | Optional PlaceholderAPI integration provides nine placeholders, usable by compatible plugins such as TAB, DeluxeChat, Essentials, HolographicDisplays, DecentHolograms, and scoreboard plugins. |
| Purpose | LuckPerms is a permissions plugin for Minecraft servers that lets admins control player access by creating groups and assigning permissions. | ServerRoles is a lightweight role-based permission and prefix management plugin for Paper and Purpur 1.21.11 servers running Java 21 or later. |
| Storage | LuckPerms supports multiple data storage options, including MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB for multi-server networks. | Role data can be stored in YAML, SQLite, or MySQL, with YAML as the default backend. |

In their own words
LuckPerms
LuckPerms is a free permissions plugin for Minecraft servers. Administrators use it to create groups and assign player permissions through commands, configuration files, or a browser-based editor. The project provides implementations for server platforms including Bukkit, BungeeCord, Fabric, Forge, Nukkit, Sponge, and Velocity, with NeoForge and Hytale also listed among supported platforms. For multi-server networks, permission data can be shared across instances using the same supported storage system; options include MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and others. The web editor works with all storage types. LuckPerms provides a public API for other plugins and a REST API extension that lets programs read and modify its data without direct database access. It can also run as a standalone app. The project says it does not report to analytics or monitoring services and does not automatically check for or install updates. It does download required libraries and translation bundles over the internet and connects to external services for features such as the web editor. Its FAQ says it supports Minecraft versions from 1.8.8 through the latest release.
ServerRoles
ServerRoles is a free role-based permissions and prefix management plugin for Paper or Purpur servers. Administrators use `/role` commands to configure display names, prefixes, hex colors, priorities, permissions, inheritance, and operator status. Roles can be assigned for a duration using day, hour, and minute values, then revert to the default role when they expire. Expiry checks run when players join and every five minutes, so a role may remain active for up to five minutes beyond its set duration. Permissions can be inherited or negated with a leading hyphen, and a configurable feature can add role prefixes and colors to chat. YAML is the default storage option, with SQLite and MySQL also supported. Optional PlaceholderAPI integration provides nine placeholders, and other plugins can query or change roles through the developer API. Requirements are Paper or Purpur 1.21.11 and Java 21 or later. The project is GPL-3.0 licensed; installation uses a release JAR in the server's `plugins/` folder.
