In their own words
Mamba
Mamba manages conda environments across Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted setups. It creates and activates environments, installs packages, and runs commands inside them. It works with conda packages and supports most conda commands; its parallel downloads and libsolv solver speed package resolution. The framework includes the mamba command-line interface, the libmamba C++ library, micromamba, and Python bindings. Environment creation accepts text, Conda YAML, explicit, and conda-lock YAML specifications, and micromamba can install conda-lock files directly. The repoquery command searches repositories and can display direct, recursive, and reverse dependencies. Environments are self-contained prefixes that can manage native dependencies across programming languages. Mamba documents verification for package archives and extracted files, while repository index verification remains experimental. By default, it warns and asks for confirmation before transactions run package link scripts that can perform system operations. Mamba is free, open-source software under the BSD-3-Clause license, with lockfile support.
Miniconda
Miniconda is a free installer for conda, Python, and their dependencies. It creates a minimal base environment, letting users build separate project environments from scratch. Conda installs software, resolves dependencies, and isolates projects so changes in one environment do not affect another. Miniconda reaches the same package repositories and environment-management capabilities as Anaconda Distribution. It is designed for command-line users who know which packages they need, and Anaconda describes it as a lightweight starting point for containers, CI/CD pipelines, and other automated workflows. The installation has no graphical interface and does not add extra packages. Miniconda runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Listed requirements include Windows 11 version 23H2 or later, macOS 12.1 or later on Apple Silicon, and 400 MB of disk space. Linux installers require glibc 2.28 or later. Local-user installation avoids administrator permissions. Package access through Anaconda repositories may have licensing requirements.
