Overview

Vespa covers vector and tensor search, positional text search, and structured-data search in one platform. Teams can combine retrieval signals with tensor functions or trained models, then serve against changing data. Hybrid search, sparse vectors, metadata filtering, and HNSW indexes add flexibility for retrieval workloads. That breadth is valuable when relevance needs deliberate tuning; it may be unnecessary for an application that only needs a basic vector lookup.

Deployment can be self-managed, run with the Vespa Kubernetes Operator, or hosted on Vespa Cloud. The choice lets teams trade infrastructure responsibility for managed service, though cloud users must account for quotas and metered compute, memory, disk, and GPU-memory rates.

Key features

Ranking and inference

Ranking signals can be combined with tensor functions or machine-learned models in ONNX and XGBoost formats, and Vespa supports inference through ONNX Runtime. This suits teams that want model scoring integrated with retrieval and serving rather than bolted onto a separate search step. A client for OpenAI-compatible APIs, including OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, Cohere, and Together.ai, is marked beta, so it is a less settled part of the platform.

Scaling and deployment

Vespa distributes functions across node clusters and supports changing cluster size without disrupting queries or writes. That is a practical fit for applications whose traffic or data grows over time. Local deployment supports Linux, macOS, and Windows 10 Pro on x86_64 or arm64 with Docker Desktop or Podman Desktop; the listed platforms also include API, web, and self-hosted options. Python and Java SDKs are supported.

Cloud security and tenant accounts

Vespa Cloud encrypts data at rest and in transit, uses node and endpoint certificates, and applies OS patches automatically. Vespa Cloud Enclave runs applications in a customer's AWS, Azure, or GCP account, but provider resource charges come in addition to Vespa Cloud costs. That can suit organizations that need their own cloud account boundary, provided they budget for both bills.

Pricing

Vespa Cloud plans are billed by resource usage and all have quotas. The rates below are the initial hourly unit prices; cloud usage can therefore vary with capacity and runtime. The free trial includes $300 in usage credits, requires no credit card, and stops the application when the credits run out.

Startup: 0.05 USD per month, with billed vCPU at $ 0.05 / hour, Memory GB at $ 0.005 / hour, Disk GB at $ 0.0002 / hour, and GPU Memory GB at $ 0.03 / hour. Shared resources, community support only, and development zones only make this the entry point for development rather than production; it has no SLA, SSO, or autoscaling.
Basic: 0.10 USD per month, with initial unit prices of vCPU $ 0.1 / hour, Memory GB $ 0.01 / hour, Disk GB $ 0.0004 / hour, and GPU Memory GB $ 0.07 / hour. Prices go down with volume. It fits applications that do not need 24/7 operational support.
Commercial: 0.15 USD per month, with initial unit prices of vCPU $ 0.145 / hour, Memory GB $ 0.0145 / hour, Disk GB $ 0.0005 / hour, and GPU Memory GB $ 0.1 / hour. Volume lowers prices; 24/7 operational support and backup and disaster recovery make it the more appropriate fit when continuity matters.
Enterprise: 0.18 USD per month, with initial vCPU at $ 0.18 / hour, Memory GB at $ 0.018 / hour, Disk GB at $ 0.0007 / hour, and GPU Memory GB at $ 0.125 / hour, plus a $20,000 minimum monthly spend. That minimum makes it a substantial commitment.
Enterprise *: 0.18 USD per month, with the same initial hourly rates as Enterprise. Prices go down with volume; it has a $20,000 minimum monthly spend, backup and disaster recovery, and SSO and dedicated support options.
Self Managed: custom pricing. It includes a self-managed deployment and unlimited support cases, with a dedicated support representative available.

Cloud plans list unlimited support cases, with response times varying by plan; Startup is limited to community support and has no SLA. The published plan terms distinguish support coverage, deployment limits, and minimum spend, so the lowest initial rate is not by itself a guide to the right fit.

Platforms

Vespa supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. For local deployment, Linux, macOS, and Windows 10 Pro are supported on x86_64 or arm64 with Docker Desktop or Podman Desktop. The Vespa Kubernetes Operator and Vespa Cloud offer alternatives to managing a local installation.

Who it's for

Vespa is for teams building AI applications where search quality, ranking, fresh real-time data, or increasing retrieval traffic are central requirements. It is a strong fit when teams need to shape ranking and scale clustered serving; it is a weaker fit when a simple vector store or a free tier is the main need, or when the team cannot accommodate cloud quotas and operational costs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Vector, tensor, positional text, and structured-data search give teams several retrieval methods in one platform.
Pros: Tensor functions and ONNX or XGBoost ranking models support tailored relevance, with ONNX Runtime inference.
Pros: Cluster-size changes can happen without affecting queries or writes, useful as workloads grow.
Cons: Every Vespa Cloud plan has a quota, and Startup is restricted to development zones with community-only support.
Cons: Enterprise plans have a $20,000 minimum monthly spend, while Enclave adds cloud-provider resource costs to Vespa Cloud charges.
Cons: The OpenAI-compatible API client is beta, so teams relying on it should account for that status.

Alternatives

For broader category browsing, compare Vector Databases, Search Databases, and Database Software.

Chroma is worth considering when a freemium option and an Apache 2.0 open-source codebase are priorities.
Qdrant offers a free tier, making it a candidate for teams seeking a no-cost cloud starting point.
Pinecone has a free Starter plan with stated index, namespace, storage, and usage-unit limits; consider it when those caps suit the workload.
Actian Zen is another freemium product with a free trial and broad listed platform support.
Upstash Vector offers a free plan with explicit daily query/update and storage limits, which can help teams assess whether a capped tier fits.
Zilliz Cloud has a free cluster with stated storage, vCU, and collection limits for teams seeking a free cloud tier.
KDB.AI provides a free cloud starter edition with memory, storage, and query-size caps.
Weaviate has a free plan with cluster, object, memory, disk, and collection limits, useful when those constraints match the intended scale.

Verdict

Choose Vespa when search relevance, multiple retrieval modes, model-based ranking, and real-time serving need to work together as traffic grows. Its deployment flexibility and cluster scaling are compelling for teams willing to manage the platform or pay for cloud resources. Look elsewhere if a free tier, a simpler vector-only workflow, or predictable low-cost usage matters more than Vespa's breadth.
