| Intended users | The maker lists AI engineers, analysts, educators, analytics engineers, data engineers, data scientists, ML engineers, and web developers as user groups. | Playcode describes the Cloud runtime as intended for business websites, MVPs, client portals, dashboards, internal tools, and small full-stack apps, including for nontechnical users. |
| Security | marimo says no user code runs without explicit user action, and notebooks opened in edit mode are statically loaded rather than executed as Python modules. | Playcode reports TLS 1.2 or higher, encryption at rest, Cloudflare edge protection, VPN-only server access, and daily encrypted backups. |
| Support | The maker directs users with installation issues to GitHub or Discord and lists [email protected] for general contact. | Playcode offers human support through chat and email, and says most questions are answered within hours. |
| What it does | marimo is an open-source reactive Python notebook for reproducible experiments, data work, and building apps. | Playcode lets users describe a website or app in natural language, then generates code, previews it, and publishes it. |

In their own words
marimo
marimo is an open-source reactive Python notebook for reproducible experiments, data work, and interactive apps. When a cell runs, dependent cells run as well or are marked stale, helping keep code and outputs consistent. Notebooks are stored as Python files that can be tracked with Git, run as scripts, or reused as modules. Users can build interfaces with sliders, dropdowns, dataframe tables, and selectable plots, then deploy notebooks as interactive web apps or run them in browsers through WebAssembly. SQL cells work with dataframes, databases, CSVs, and Google Sheets, with named backends including Polars, Pandas, PyArrow, DuckDB, SQLite, and Postgres. AI notebook features support OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama, and compatible APIs. marimo has extensions for VS Code and PyCharm, with the VS Code extension also working in Cursor and other VS Code forks. The free hosted option molab provides 4 CPUs, 32 GB RAM, and sessions up to 12 hours; notebooks are public by default. Running notebook code can execute arbitrary code, so the maker advises using trusted notebooks or reviewing code first. The open-source notebook is free.
Playcode
Playcode combines an AI builder for websites and apps with a cloud runtime for hosting full-stack projects. Describe a site or app in plain language, then edit it visually or work with its React, Vue, or HTML code. Playcode Cloud includes production hosting, a database, logins, files, background jobs, HTTPS, and WebSockets. It can restore code, files, and database together to a saved point in about a second. Projects can be downloaded as code and moved to another host; Playcode says users own their code. Its agent can build API integrations for services such as Stripe, email, Telegram, and WhatsApp when supplied with required keys. Playcode supports web, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, with real-time collaboration, public sharing, deployment support, and custom domains. The free plan costs nothing and allows three projects, one collaborator, and requires branding. Pro costs $25 a month; Max costs $100 a month. Automatic cross-machine scaling and multi-region failover are still on the roadmap.
