Overview

MarketplaceKit is a platform for building marketplaces around products, rentals, bookings, or listings that connect buyers with sellers. It is best suited to startups, shops, and communities that need flexible listing and revenue models. Its range is a strength, but self-hosting shifts support and some operational responsibility to the customer.

Owners can earn through commissions, listing fees, or memberships, while sellers can be onboarded and payouts automated. For more options in the category, see our Online Marketplace Software list.

Key features

MarketplaceKit accommodates multiple kinds of inventory: products can have variants, and bookings can be organized by date, night, or time slot. That flexibility suits mixed marketplaces, though businesses needing only a straightforward shop may not need such breadth. Direct messaging and listing moderation support seller-buyer interaction, while member approval can limit who posts or browses—useful for curated communities.

Owners can customize the experience with HTML, CSS, and snippets, and use a homepage page builder. Listings support images, video, and PDFs; uploads get generated thumbnails, and the media gallery offers AI-powered cropping. These tools provide control over presentation without changing the underlying marketplace models.

The add-ons page lists Stripe, MailChimp, Paystack, InstaMojo, and offline payments. Stripe processes card and ACH payments, and MarketplaceKit supports payments in more than 130 countries. The site is responsive on phones and tablets; an API can be used to build native iOS and Android apps.

MarketplaceKit says it will use reasonable and appropriate measures to protect customer data, but customers also bear responsibility for data security, configuration, and backups. Hosted customers receive daily database backups that they can download in a browser, an important operational difference from the self-hosted edition.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free and self-hosted. It is a lighter version than the hosted product and includes no customer support, so it fits teams able to manage their own installation and operations.

Hobby costs $15/month and includes 2,500 listings, 10k unique visitors/month, 10GB storage, and unlimited members. Weekday email support is included. It is the entry point for a smaller hosted marketplace, but the listing, traffic, and storage ceilings make growth a reason to move up.

Plus costs $30/month, with unlimited listings, 20k unique visitors/month, 20GB storage, and unlimited members. It keeps weekday email support while removing the listing cap; its traffic and storage limits still matter for busier or media-heavy sites.

Pro costs $60/month and includes unlimited listings, 50k+ unique visitors/month, 50GB storage, and unlimited members. It adds email and technical support, making it the strongest fit for larger hosted operations that need more room and help. The hosted Hobby and Plus plans include weekday email support; only Pro specifies technical support.

Platforms

MarketplaceKit supports web, Android, iOS, API, and self-hosted deployments. The responsive site covers phone and tablet browsers, while the API provides a route to native mobile apps.

Who it's for

Choose MarketplaceKit if you need several marketplace formats, configurable ways to earn revenue, and controls over member access and listings. It is less suitable for teams that require customer support on a free self-hosted plan or want hosted capacity without traffic and storage thresholds.

Pros and cons

Pros: Product, rental, booking, and seller-contact listing models support varied marketplace concepts.
Pros: Commissions, listing fees, memberships, seller onboarding, and automated payouts cover key marketplace revenue and payment operations.
Pros: Hosted plans include downloadable daily backups, and paid tiers provide support.
Cons: The free Community Edition is self-hosted, lighter than the hosted version, and has no customer support.
Cons: Hosted Hobby and Plus cap monthly visitors and storage; Hobby also caps listings.
Cons: Customers retain some responsibility for security, configuration, and backups.

Verdict

MarketplaceKit is a strong fit for startups, shops, and communities building a marketplace that needs more than one listing or revenue model.
