Overview

MasterGear is an emulator for a range of 8-bit SEGA consoles and computers, aimed especially at hobbyists who want to debug software for them. Its system coverage and debugging tools make it a focused option, though compatibility is not complete and users must bring their own game files.

Key features

MasterGear covers MasterSystem, GameGear, SG1000, SC3000, SF7000, Mark2 and Mark3. Its emulation includes the Z80 CPU, console video processors, SN76489 sound and Mark3 YM2413 FM sound. The maker estimates compatibility at about 98% for its SMS, GG, SF7000, SC3000 and SG1000 cartridge and disk images; that leaves a meaningful chance that a particular image will not work.

A built-in debugger gives hobbyists a way to work on software without rare development hardware. Save and load states are supported, but state files are not guaranteed to carry across versions on different hardware. Automatic GZIP ROM handling and soundtrack logging to MIDI files add practical tools for working with games and their audio.

NetPlay is supported. On Android, it works over a local network or the Internet, alongside State Exchange. Android controls include keyboard, gamepad, touchscreen and accelerometer input; named accessories include Bluetooth gamepads, Xperia Play buttons, iCade, Sixaxis and Moga gamepads. The Android app does not share data with third parties, may collect app information, performance data and device or other IDs, encrypts data in transit, and does not allow data deletion.

No BIOS is required, but the distribution contains no game ROM images, so this is not a ready-to-play library. Source code is not publicly available. Companies can contact the maker about licensing MasterGear for products using SEGA games, and about licensing the games themselves.

Pricing

MasterGear Windows/Linux is free at 0.00 USD per free for all Windows versions and 64-bit Ubuntu. It is the straightforward choice for desktop users who want the emulator without a purchase.

MasterGear Android costs 430.00 USD per once and supports Android 4.1 and newer. This is a one-time purchase rather than a recurring charge, but Android users should weigh that cost against the free Windows/Linux edition. The Android app directs users with problems to the EMUL8 discussion group and provides luarvique@gmail.com as a support email.

Platforms

MasterGear runs on Windows, Linux and Android. The Windows/Linux plan covers all Windows versions and 64-bit Ubuntu; the Android app requires Android 4.1 or newer. There is no public source code.

Who it's for

MasterGear suits SEGA 8-bit enthusiasts who want coverage across consoles and computers, and hobbyists who value a built-in debugger. It is less suitable for anyone expecting bundled games, complete image compatibility or a free Android edition.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad coverage of seven 8-bit SEGA systems, with hardware-specific sound support.
Pros: Built-in debugging, NetPlay, save states, GZIP ROM handling and MIDI soundtrack logging offer more than basic emulation.
Pros: No BIOS requirement removes one setup dependency.
Cons: Compatibility is estimated at about 98%, not 100%, across the named image types.
Cons: Users must supply their own ROM images.
Cons: Android is a paid one-time purchase, and state files may not work across versions on different hardware.
Cons: The source code is not publicly available.

Alternatives

For another option focused on Master System emulation, see Sega Master System Emulators; for Game Gear choices, see Game Gear Emulators.

Virtual Jaguar is worth considering if you want a free, open-source emulator core across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows, and can use a libretro frontend such as RetroArch. Choose Gearlynx if its broader platform range is a better fit. Emulicious is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows, with commercial users asked to seek permission first. Genesis Plus GX is another free choice for Linux and Windows, with source code under a specific non-commercial license and a standalone GameCube/Wii build.

OpenHomeKaraoke, ares, Dega and DSP Emulator are also alternatives.

Verdict

Choose MasterGear if you want a broad 8-bit SEGA emulator with a built-in debugger and NetPlay, particularly on Windows or Linux where it is free. Look elsewhere if you need bundled ROMs, complete compatibility, public source code or a free Android option.
