Overview

Open Planner Studio is a construction scheduling and resource-planning tool for building, infrastructure and civil-works projects. It is best suited to planners and BIM coordinators who want an open, exchangeable project schedule. Its IFC-centred workflow and broad file support stand out, but its beta status makes it a less certain choice for teams that need an established platform.

Schedules are stored as IFC 4.3 files, an open buildingSMART standard, rather than a proprietary format. That gives teams a more open basis for keeping planning data alongside building information. OpenAEC marks the product Available Beta and invites work planners, schedulers, project leads and BIM coordinators to test it and provide feedback; teams adopting it for live work should weigh that status carefully.

The maker describes a Foundation that maintains tools, OpenAEC Studio for implementation, hosting, custom development and professional support, and a contributor community. An offline manual in fourteen languages includes a quick start, practical guides, reference pages and sample projects, giving teams material to consult without an internet connection.

Key features

Scheduling and resource control

Gantt charts show task timing, while automatic critical-path calculation identifies the sequence that governs the schedule's duration. Resource histograms show demand, and automatic levelling addresses overallocation. Together, these tools cover core scheduling and resource-planning needs without requiring a separate application for each.

Construction calendars can account for holidays, recesses, frost delays, inspection moments and project phasing. Tasks can be measured in days or hours, which supports planning at different levels of detail. The combination is particularly relevant to construction work whose calendar cannot be treated as a simple run of working days.

File exchange and AI access

The software imports and exports IFC, CSV, MS Project XML and Primavera P6 XML, and can open MS Project MPP files natively. That breadth makes it a practical candidate when schedules must move between construction data workflows and established project-planning formats. It does not, by itself, remove the need to check that an exchange preserves the information a team relies on.

A built-in MCP server allows compatible AI clients, including Claude Code, to read and edit schedules. Pause controls, read-only mode, automatic backups and an activity panel provide safeguards and visibility around that access. Teams that do not use compatible clients can ignore this capability; those exploring AI-assisted schedule work have a direct integration path.

Reports and recovery

Reports export to PDF at approximately 220 DPI, with paper sizes up to A2, baseline overlays, and status or progress lines. These options support sharing schedule snapshots and comparing progress against a baseline, including on larger paper formats.

Crash recovery is available, and optional periodic saving can write back to a writable project file. Unsaved documents are not automatically overwritten, a useful protection against unintended replacement, though teams must still choose whether to enable periodic saving.

Pricing

Open Planner Studio is free and open source under LGPL-3.0: both named plans, “Free and open source” and “Open Planner Studio,” cost 0.00 USD per free. There is no subscription and no per-seat licence fee, so the core schedule, Gantt, critical-path and resource-planning capabilities do not depend on a paid tier or team size.

The free plan includes IFC 4.3 schedules and desktop and browser use. There is no free trial because the product itself is free. No paid upgrade is described; OpenAEC Studio separately offers implementation, hosting, custom development and professional support, which may suit organizations seeking services beyond the free software.

Platforms

Open Planner Studio runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and the web. There are no mobile apps, so teams needing a native phone or tablet workflow should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Work planners and schedulers can use its Gantt charts, critical-path calculation and resource levelling to coordinate construction work. Project leads get calendars that can reflect construction-specific interruptions and reporting with baselines and progress indicators. BIM coordinators may value schedules stored in IFC and the range of supported exchange formats.

It is a less natural fit for teams that require a mature, production-established product or native mobile apps. Its beta status also makes it better suited to evaluation and feedback than to buyers unwilling to take on the uncertainty of a beta tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source licensing with no subscription or per-seat fees makes it available to individuals and teams without a licence-cost barrier.
Pros: IFC 4.3 storage, multiple import and export formats, and native MPP opening make schedule exchange a central strength.
Pros: Construction calendars, resource histograms and automatic levelling address practical scheduling and resource constraints.
Pros: Offline documentation in fourteen languages and crash recovery support onboarding and resilience.
Cons: Available Beta status is a meaningful caveat for teams selecting software for dependable live-project use.
Cons: No mobile apps means the workflow does not extend to native Android or iOS applications.

Alternatives

usBIM.platform is worth considering if you want free online applications with 10 GB of cloud storage; its broader subscriptions use custom pricing.
Nialli Visual Planner may fit teams that want a paid planner with a 30-day full-access trial and no credit-card requirement.
Trimble Quadri is an alternative if a free, read-only model viewer with measuring and commenting is the priority.
Asta Powerproject may suit a single Windows user willing to pay 695.00 GBP per year for a single-user subscription, excluding VAT.
Birdog is an option for teams preferring a project-priced subscription at 150.00 USD per month rather than a free open-source tool.
Buildlr may appeal to teams seeking a full platform without a subscription or per-user fee, with charges based on invoices sent through the service.
ConstructionOnline is a paid alternative with enterprise pricing starting at 36840.00 USD per year.
GanttAI is another web-based alternative.

Verdict

Open Planner Studio is a strong candidate for construction planners and BIM coordinators who want resource-aware scheduling, open IFC-based files and broad project-format exchange without licence fees. Its main reason to choose it is that combination of construction-specific planning and an open, free workflow; its main reason to look elsewhere is the beta status, compounded for mobile teams by the absence of native apps.
